Deliverability is one of the overlooked things in most codebases. If your signup confirmation mail goes in to the spam folder, you've just lost a client.

C++ is the language you turn to once you can't squeeze out more performance in your interpreted languages (PHP, Python). It's a tricky beast, because it can and will just crash when you make a mistake. 
I've replaced several services with C++ in several apps to win performance. I used to code software rendered 3d engines years ago.

I've been writing it for 10 years. What's there to tell about PHP? Know your weird pitfalls and try to write managable code.

You need it to make your sites look nice. Nowadays life it getting better because we can get away with ignoring the old IE versions. I used to debug IE6 issues from time to time and I hope never to do that again.

I've written several apps based on Node and I've created extensive frontend systems in Mootools, JQuery and VanillaJS.
