I've used MySQL from the beginning of my career in many projects especially those requiring transactions i.e. ecommerce or auction systems. Personally I prefer NoSQL as it allows to prototype applications and create MVP faster. 

Worked with CakePHP, Kohana, Zend Framework and Symfony2 but currently fall in love with Node.js
