About

Gavrilo is a backend engineer with 13+ years of experience building software across AAA games, SaaS, e-commerce, and Oil & Gas. He enjoys taking products from an idea to production: understanding the problem, designing the architecture, choosing technologies, and building systems that stay simple as they grow. Recently, he has focused on AWS serverless, distributed systems, .NET, DynamoDB, EventBridge, PostgreSQL, and technical leadership.

Work Experience

Senior Backend Engineer
Illuvium | Dec 2023 - Present
PostgreSQL
Elasticsearch
SNS
DynamoDB
CloudWatch
AWS Lambda
.NET
API Gateway

Sole backend engineer responsible for the architecture and implementation of several blockchain games.

  • Designed, built and operated the complete backend for Illuvium Deathmatch, from the first architecture decisions to production deployment.
  • Modelled game flows from state to state, including idempotency, caching, data storage, analytics tracking and operational tooling.
  • Designed the backend around roughly 100 Lambda functions, 3 APIs, SQS, EventBridge, OpenSearch and a single DynamoDB table using PK/SK access patterns.
  • Made architecture decisions around EventBridge, OpenSearch and backend data modelling.
  • Worked on Immutable zkEVM integration and modelled NFT data for the marketplace.
  • Owned the backend for Gauntlet from the first line of code until the project moved to GameLift servers.
  • Designed backend services for a new MMO, including scalability, concurrency and real-time processing concerns.
  • Reduced Lambda cold starts by upgrading to .NET 9 and removing AutoMapper.

Building products from scratch and leading architecture, backend development, cloud infrastructure and product direction.

  • Designed and built Dental Lab Guru, a SaaS platform used by dental labs in 6 countries.
  • Designed and built MVP-DB, a serverless multi-tenant PostgreSQL platform created because I needed it myself.
  • Led backend development while working with another engineer on the frontend; wrote large parts of the frontend when needed.
  • Re-architected Dental Lab Guru towards Node.js, EventBridge and event-driven workflows.
  • Implemented subscriptions, payments, notifications, real-time updates, deployments and CI/CD.
  • Worked directly with customers, including Rocket Lab in Ukraine, whose feedback shaped a lot of the product.

AWS
I designed and built the complete backend for Illuvium Deathmatch as the only backend engineer on the project. The backend is built on AWS serverless and handles matchmaking, game progression, rewards, leaderboards, analytics, blockchain integration and operational tooling. I designed the event-driven workflows, DynamoDB data model and Immutable zkEVM integration while working closely with the game team as the gameplay evolved. One of the biggest challenges was keeping the backend flexible enough to support constantly changing game rules without turning it into a maintenance nightmare. Technologies: .NET, AWS Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, OpenSearch, PostgreSQL, Immutable zkEVM

.NET
Dental Lab Guru is a SaaS platform for dental laboratories that helps manage cases, production, deadlines, deliveries, invoicing and communication. I designed and built the backend from scratch and later re-architected it towards Node.js and an event-driven architecture as the product grew. Besides development, I worked directly with customers to understand their workflows and decide which features should be built next. The most rewarding part has been seeing laboratories in different countries use the same product while continuously shaping it through their feedback. Technologies: .NET, Node.js, React, MySQL, AWS, EventBridge, SES, Docker
