Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the Front-End Engineer role is responsible for the design and development of front-end experiences which meet the needs of our users. This role will require deep knowledge of usability, web + native UI technologies, applied to help us create and improve our responsive desktop and mobile web applications. You will regularly meet with the engineering and product team to refine feature designs, implement high-level UI components and tooling, and apply those to end-user features in our native and web applications.

Our team is distributed across the US and EU, and we use modern software engineering practices and tools to support asynchronous remote collaboration. Every team member at ZeroTier is expected to work independently and leverage shared issue tracking, documentation, and automated testing to contribute to our shared base of reliable, well-defined code.

This temporary freelance position, lasting approximately three months, is based in the Netherlands—or anywhere else in the EU. If you are in the Netherlands, your primary workspace will be our office next to Utrecht Central Station; if you are elsewhere in the EU, the role will be fully remote. The engagement may be extended and could potentially transition into a permanent employment position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Apply modern UI design and programming technologies to improve the usability, visual appeal, consistency, and accessibility our user-facing applications
Help our users understand and navigate our highly-flexible networking and security tools through good UI affordances and information architecture
Implement fast, approachable UI, leveraging the best of modern web interface technologies with an awareness of the expectations and conventions of our target platforms.
Develop and maintain shared UI style guides, components, and testing processes.

EXPERIENCE

~3 years professional front-end development, including at least 1 year building Vuetify-based apps
Delivered production web/mobile interfaces with Vue that meet accessibility and responsive-design standards
Collaborated in distributed teams using Slack, code reviews, and async workflows

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong technical stack: Vue + Vuetify, JavaScript/TypeScript, modern CSS, HTML, DOM APIs
Portfolio/GitHub that shows clean component architecture and intuitive UI work
Quick to learn new frameworks, APIs, tooling (e.g., Storybook)
Clear communicator—comfortable in stand-ups, written threads, and code-review feedback
User-centric mindset; able to translate domain knowledge into UX improvements
Nice to have: familiarity with ZeroTier or a keen interest in networking-related products

AVAILABILITY & ENGAGEMENT

Able to commit 20+ hours per week, embedding with our team via Slack and regular stand-ups
Can start within two weeks (before May 22nd 2025) of offer acceptance
Contract runs through 1 August with an option to extend
Direct freelancers preferred, but agency resources are welcome if they can provide the same level of commitment and integration
