About The Role

The Staff AI Engineer role at Capital One offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development and deployment of cutting-edge AI systems that redefine banking experiences. As part of the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, research scientists, and product managers to build scalable, responsible, and innovative AI solutions. Your expertise will drive the design, development, and optimization of foundational AI models, including large language models, similarity search, and multi-agent workflows. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical vision and long-term roadmap of Capital One’s AI infrastructure, ensuring that systems are efficient, reliable, and aligned with responsible AI principles. This position offers the flexibility of remote work and the chance to influence enterprise-wide AI architecture, setting standards for tooling, observability, and deployment across the organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies
• Master’s Degree in relevant fields plus at least 6 years of experience in AI/ML development
• Minimum of 8 years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java
• Proven experience in designing scalable AI systems with trade-offs around cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy
• Experience deploying AI solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
• Strong background in AI system architecture, including data pipelines, observability, and governance frameworks
• Demonstrated leadership in mentoring engineering teams and influencing cross-functional stakeholders
• Experience with state-of-the-art AI techniques like LLM inference, similarity search, vector databases, and responsible AI principles
• Excellent communication skills to articulate complex AI concepts clearly and effectively

Responsibilities

• Partner with engineering, research, and product teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance customer and associate experiences
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components including foundation models, large language models, agents, and workflows
• Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, PyTorch, and VectorDBs
• Invent and implement optimization techniques to improve the performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency of large-scale AI systems
• Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap of foundational AI systems at Capital One
• Design and integrate model routing, caching, and orchestration systems supporting hybrid and multi-model workloads
• Champion responsible AI principles by embedding transparency, fairness, and reproducibility into system design
• Lead internal education initiatives, mentorship programs, and best practice dissemination through architecture councils and AI guilds
• Define enterprise AI architecture standards, including data governance, observability, and evaluation frameworks
• Drive federated and multi-cloud AI strategies to enhance resilience, compliance, and compute efficiency
