Senior Application IT Developer (Remote)

Job Description

The Application IT Developer IV analyzes, models, writes/modifies, and supports software source code that enables business capabilities, following established Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) processes. They provide primary legacy platform support (COBOL on HP3000) that keeps high-volume file, print, and PDF production running reliably, while supporting Vericast’s transition away from HP3000 by answering process/COBOL job questions for migration teams and, where skills align, assisting with related ETL/Python-based migration development.

• Develops Applications / Reports / Systems — 5%
• Estimates component/application level work efforts — 5%
• Creates Application and System Design Documents — 5%
• Creates RFI/RFP requests / responses for vendor product evaluations — 5%
• Experience in multiple SDLC methodologies — 5%
• Technically proficient in application/component; may act as internal consultant — 5%
• Responsible for fulfilling end-user requests — 5%
• Good communication and facilitation skills — 5%
• Provides on-call support as required — 5%
• Good business acumen — 5%
• Periodically operates under deadlines and may be subject to extreme workloads — 5%
• Works with supervision, minimal supervision, or without supervision — 5%

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

EXPERIENCE

4+ years with Bachelor’s degree or 10+ years work experience; hands-on COBOL/HP3000 experience supporting file-based, high-volume production environments strongly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Required Technical Skills:

• Strong COBOL programming expertise on HP3000.
• Experience with HP3000 IMAGE databases.
• Proficiency with Robelle tools (SuperTool, Qedit, MPEX).
• Solid JCL knowledge for batch processing, automation, and production workflows.
• Experience using ad hoc query tools for data analysis and validation.
• Working knowledge of POSIX/Apache in HP3000 or hybrid environments.
• Proven support of print production and file-based processing workflows; familiarity with banking/retail/marketing campaign contexts.
• Awareness of postal software/tools (e.g., BCC, Code1) and postal compliance/reporting.

Desired / Plus Skills:

• Experience with ETL tools or data integration frameworks (designing mappings, orchestration, job monitoring).
• Python for data parsing, transformation, reconciliation, and automation; familiarity with packaging and logging for production use. (nice to have)
• Experience in hybrid legacy/modern environments and an appetite to learn new technologies as part of platform modernization.
• Strong documentation/knowledge-sharing to reduce single points of failure and provide PTO coverage.

Professional Skills:

• Excellent troubleshooting and data analysis; attention to detail in deadline-driven, high-volume production.
• Clear communication and facilitation across technical/business teams; ability to translate legacy logic into modern design language.

EQUIPMENT/SOFTWARE UTILIZED

HP3000, IMAGE, Robelle (SuperTool, Qedit, MPEX), ad hoc query tools; JCL/batch schedulers; version control; ticketing/knowledge tools; ETL toolsets.

COMMUNICATION AND CONTACTS

Communicates directly with internal and external customers. Partners with Product Development and Print Production to align logic to configured product/campaign requirements and ensure accurate, timely delivery.

Additional Information

Base salary: $77,000-$100,000

The ultimate compensation offered for the position will depend upon several factors such as skill level, cost of living, experience, and responsibilities.
