Overview of the role
We are currently seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior IT Project Manager to join our Data & Technology team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and manage a diverse range of information technology projects as part of a major transformation programme.
As the Senior IT Project Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the modernisation of UK Biobank's data and technology systems. Initially, you will focus on the removal of legacy technologies and the introduction of new systems, services, and platforms to meet the evolving needs and expectations of UK Biobank and its partners. Projects will include a move to Office 365 as part of a wider transition to cloud-based services. You will also be involved in the upgrade of our existing information security solutions and the implementation of new data storage systems.
Looking ahead, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of IT provision at UK Biobank's new headquarters in central Manchester. This exciting endeavour involves several major projects already in the planning stage. As the Senior IT Project Manager, you will be instrumental in the installation of a new secure network, the establishment of an accredited data centre, and the delivery of state-of-the-art end-user services.

About You
To excel in the role of Senior IT Project Manager at UK Biobank, you should possess a strong combination of project management experience, leadership skills, and technical expertise. We are seeking a candidate who thrives in a complex, fast-growing environment, and has a proven track record of successfully managing a diverse range of technology projects. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:
Extensive Project Management Experience: You should have a minimum of 5 years of experience managing a broad range of technology projects, including infrastructure, applications, software development, and information security. Experience managing complex and high-risk projects with multiple dependencies and tight scheduling constraints is highly valued.
Strong Leadership and People Management Skills: As a Senior IT Project Manager, you will be responsible for leading and directing project teams. Therefore, you should have proven leadership and people management skills, with the ability to build relationships, explore needs, understand different perspectives, set proper expectations, and influence stakeholders to achieve results.
Excellent Communication Skills: Effective communication is essential in this role. You should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels. You should be able to produce clear, concise, timely, and professional documentation.
Independent Decision-Making: The ability to make independent decisions within project parameters is crucial. You should demonstrate a willingness to take responsibility for decisions that have a significant impact. You should be able to make decisions based on diverse, partial, or conflicting information, considering various potential options.
Strong Technical Knowledge: A solid technical background is essential, including an understanding of cloud-based services, integrated solutions, data management, system migrations, and information security. Previous experience working in a dedicated technical role would be highly beneficial.
Project Governance and Stakeholder Management: Experience in setting up project governance, chairing project boards, and managing multiple internal and external stakeholders is important. You should be skilled at establishing communication channels, developing contacts, and managing relationships to ensure project success.
Attention to Detail and Problem-Solving Abilities: You should be attentive to detail, with excellent problem-solving skills. The ability to identify risks, develop contingency plans, and think critically to overcome obstacles is essential in this role.
Certifications and Knowledge: Current PRINCE2 Practitioner and PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner certifications are essential, while PMP, APM, or other project and programme management qualifications would be desirable. Knowledge of compliance requirements and standards such as ISO9001, ISO 27001, and ISO27018 would also be beneficial
