## About the Company
Binary Defense is a Managed Detection and Response (MDR) provider focused on helping organizations detect threats earlier, respond faster, and strengthen their overall security posture.
Its team of SOC analysts, threat hunters, detection engineers, and threat researchers works continuously to deliver proactive, risk-focused cybersecurity outcomes. Binary Defense combines security expertise with an attacker-focused mindset to help organizations protect critical systems and data.
The company provides a flexible, remote-friendly environment with opportunities for employees to expand their technical skills and contribute to a growing cybersecurity organization.
## About the Role
Binary Defense is seeking a Data Scientist / Software Engineer for a dual-discipline role combining applied data science with production software engineering.
This is a hands-on position focused on taking data-driven ideas from hypothesis through production deployment. You will build and operate data and machine learning capabilities using large-scale cybersecurity telemetry while developing production services, APIs, and pipelines that support MDR operations and the NightBeacon product suite.
The role requires strong data science and software engineering skills, with an emphasis on building solutions that reach production and deliver measurable value rather than remaining as research prototypes.
### Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and deploy production-grade data and machine learning systems using large-scale cybersecurity telemetry.
Work with endpoint, network, identity, and cloud-derived security signals.
Apply statistical, analytical, and machine learning techniques to cybersecurity datasets.
Translate analytical findings and models into deployable software solutions.
Develop, test, and maintain backend services, APIs, and data pipelines integrating ML models and analytics into products and SOC tooling.
Collaborate with software engineering, product, detection engineering, and security engineering teams.
Integrate algorithms and analytics directly into Binary Defense platforms.
Maintain high standards for code quality through testing, reviews, documentation, and design participation.
Contribute to architectural decisions affecting data and ML systems.
Operationalize models using appropriate monitoring, versioning, retraining, and rollback strategies.
Apply MLOps practices throughout the machine learning lifecycle.
Identify opportunities where data science and engineering investments can improve outcomes for security analysts and clients.
Contribute to product, services, and detection engineering roadmaps.
Build data-driven capabilities that are production-ready and deliver measurable business and security value.
### Required Qualifications
#### Data Science
Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, or equivalent experience.
At least 3 years of experience as a Data Scientist, ML Engineer, Applied Research Engineer, or similar role.
Experience supporting cybersecurity applications is highly relevant.
Strong working knowledge of linear algebra, statistics, probability, and mathematical foundations of modern machine learning.
Strong understanding of statistical modeling, supervised learning, and unsupervised learning.
Ability to evaluate tradeoffs between classical machine learning and deep learning approaches.
Hands-on experience with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
Experience with big data technologies such as Spark, the Hadoop ecosystem, or modern equivalents.
Experience working with NoSQL data stores.
Experience with data visualization and analyst-facing tools such as Tableau, Power BI, D3.js, or similar platforms.
#### Software Engineering
At least 3 years of experience writing and shipping production software used by real users in a team environment.
Strong proficiency in Python.
Working competence in at least one additional production language, such as Go, Rust, C#/.NET, Java, or TypeScript.
Strong foundations in data structures, algorithms, object-oriented and functional programming patterns, API design, and scalable system design.
Experience designing and building REST or gRPC APIs and supporting services.
Strong understanding of relational and NoSQL database design.
Experience with query optimization and schema evolution.
Proficiency with Git and modern code review workflows.
Experience writing unit and integration tests.
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.
Experience shipping software using feature flags or staged rollouts.
Experience with Docker and containerized applications.
Experience with Kubernetes, ECS, or an equivalent orchestration or deployment platform.
Familiarity with AWS, Azure, or GCP and their managed data, compute, and ML services.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to explain and defend technical decisions clearly.
Ability to create documentation that can be effectively used by engineers and security analysts.
### Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience applying data science to cybersecurity problems, including detection engineering, threat intelligence enrichment, behavioral analytics, malware classification, alert triage, or adversary attribution.
Experience with managed machine learning services such as Amazon SageMaker, Vertex AI, or Azure ML.
Familiarity with LLM-based systems, including retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, evaluation frameworks, and prompt and model lifecycle management.
Experience working in Agile or continuous-delivery environments.
Knowledge of data privacy and security regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, or HIPAA.
Experience handling sensitive customer data in accordance with applicable privacy and security requirements.
Familiarity with DevOps and SRE practices.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
Knowledge of observability practices involving metrics, logs, and traces.
Experience participating in incident response.
Background in threat intelligence, security research, security engineering, or SOC analysis.
