Toast is driven by building the restaurant platform that helps restaurants adapt, take control, and get back to what they do best: building the businesses they love. We’re looking for a Full stack Senior Software Engineer to join the Kitchen Operations team.

The kitchen is the heart of the restaurant, and the Toast KDS (Kitchen Display System) keeps it running smoothly when the pace of service heats up. Restaurants install KDS tablets at prep stations across the kitchen so everyone has a real-time picture of which dishes to prepare to keep service flowing. Kitchen operations are directly integrated with online ordering services so restaurants can jump on new orders and adapt to changes in demand. KDS data powers adaptive AI predictions that let guests know how long it will take to prepare their meal. Guests and waitstaff are automatically notified via SMS or POS when a meal leaves the kitchen. With the KDS, kitchens run efficiently with clear communication, minimal mistakes, high throughput, and quick delivery of fresh food to guests.

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

Toast is looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join our Kitchen Operations team who has the ability and drive to make an impact not only on their own but by also enabling those around them to succeed. You’ll be partnering with stakeholders, product managers, product designers, and other engineers to develop best-in-class solutions that create a unified, seamless experience for restaurant kitchens everywhere.

• Design, build, deploy, and maintain highly resilient and scalable services for Toast’s Kitchen Display System
• Develop and maintain Kitchen-related features on Toast’s web dashboard
• Contribute to Toast’s AI tools
• Lead complex projects that improve functionality and reliability for our customers
• Partner with a wide array of teams across Toast
• Taking ownership of the Android system
• Ensure quality by building automated testing for changes
• Roll* features out to customers, including monitoring for success
• Collaborate with UX and PM on the definition and design of features
• Mentor and coach other engineers

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

• 5+ years of experience with Java, Kotlin, or similar object-oriented languages
• Proficient in modern web technologies and UI frameworks (e.g., React, Javascript , TypeScript, REST, GraphQL) with 3+ years of relevant experience
• Experienced with databases (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB) including schema design and optimization
• In-depth understanding of microservices, distributed systems, and enterprise messaging
• Proven track record of delivering reliable services to production
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
• Focused on delivering positive impact for Toast customers
• A passion for technology and continuous learning
• Enthusiasm for solving impactful challenges and writing clean, scalable code
• Enjoys building well-engineered, usable and accessible systems
• Experience working in a team with Agile/Scrum methodology

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions, if eligible), benefits, and equity (if eligible).

Pay Range

$134,000—$214,000 USD
