About the Thousand Brains Project:

The open-source Thousand Brains Project is building an efficient and robust intelligence platform. The Thousand Brains Theory provides us with a solid foundation for implementing a generally intelligent system, and we are creating an open-source community around it. Join our team and be part of building the next big thing!

Job Description:

As a software engineer on the Thousand Brains Project, you will build an open-source platform and make it accessible to a large research and user community. Additionally, you will write code and maintain infrastructure supporting our researchers’ experiments. This is a full-time remote position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Become a Project Maintainer and maintain the platform’s design philosophy, technical direction, and conventions.
  • Refactor, design, implement, maintain, and document the platform, support researcher and community needs and use cases, and resolve issues that arise.
  • Engage with the community and contributors on GitHub, Discourse. Triage, review, merge, and comment on GitHub issues and pull requests. Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned Requests for Comments (RFCs). Propose the disposition of and vote on RFCs.
  • Refactor, design, implement, maintain, document, and operate Thousand Brains Project research infrastructure using IaC, support researcher needs and use cases, and resolve any issues that arise.
  • Author RFCs, presentations, posts, and other written or video communications to gather feedback and build consensus for intended changes.
  • Update and upgrade project dependencies, libraries, and frameworks, ensuring compatibility between the core project, external dependencies, operating systems, and hardware.
  • Ensure our code adheres to the quality standards of open-source code bases and that contributions are easily made.
  • Ensure our code is easy to use, follows OOP principles, and is well-tested and well-documented.
  • Review research meetings and other research activities to maintain situational awareness of and anticipate changes in researcher needs.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 7-10 years experience in professional software development.
  • High proficiency in Python.
  • At least 5 years of working on well-maintained code bases adhering to OOP principles.
  • OOP refactoring experience.
  • Experience in educating and collaborating with external code contributors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and welcoming attitude towards code contributors.
  • Team player. Proven ability to collaborate with others in a software engineering team.
  • A general interest in creating an intelligence platform.

Job Location: Remote work in the United States and selected international locations.

Compensation: We offer a competitive salary reflective of the candidate’s expertise. Our compensation package includes full medical, dental, and vacation benefits (details depend on geographic location). This position’s base annual salary range is $134,400 to $201,600; the exact salary will depend on the candidate’s experience level and fit to the job description, responsibilities, and requirements.
