About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our client's team and play a critical role in building and enhancing our modern local government management platform. This role is ideal for someone who possesses deep expertise in technologies, distributed systems, cloud architecture, and SQL Server, while also embracing the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-enabled software development.

As a senior member of the engineering team, you will design, implement, and optimize enterprise applications that support mission-critical government functions, including payments, workflows, reporting, inspections, citizen engagement, and public-facing services. You will also help drive the organization's adoption of AI technologies, intelligent automation, and AI-assisted engineering practices to improve developer productivity, platform capabilities, and customer outcomes.

You will collaborate closely with Product, DevOps, QA, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions while mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Software Engineering & Platform Development

• Design, develop, and maintain applications across backend services, APIs, Azure-hosted components, and web-based integrations.

• Build and enhance core platform services, including:

• Authentication and identity management services.

• Workflow automation engines.

• Reporting and document generation systems.

• Payment processing integrations.

• Public and internal APIs.

• Design scalable and maintainable application architectures following SOLID principles and industry best practices.

• Develop secure, well-documented, testable, and performant code.

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve production issues while maintaining platform reliability and customer satisfaction.

• Collaborate with DevOps teams on CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, observability, and cloud operations.

AI Adoption & Intelligent Automation

• Champion the adoption of AI-assisted software development tools and practices to improve engineering efficiency and code quality.

• Evaluate, prototype, and implement AI-powered capabilities within the platform, including:

• Intelligent workflow automation.

• Natural language interfaces.

• AI-assisted reporting and document generation.

• Knowledge retrieval and search enhancements.

• Citizen self-service experiences.

• Identify opportunities to leverage Large Language Models (LLMs), generative AI, machine learning services, and AI APIs to solve business challenges.

• Partner with product and engineering leadership to define and execute an AI roadmap aligned with organizational goals.

• Establish best practices for responsible AI usage, including security, governance, privacy, and compliance considerations.

• Promote AI literacy across the engineering organization through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and hands-on collaboration.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and career development support.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and technical decision-making across the platform.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Help establish engineering standards, development practices, and innovation initiatives that drive continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
• 5+ years of professional experience developing applications using C# and .NET technologies.
• Strong experience with Microsoft IIS, WCF, RESTful APIs, and Azure App Services.
• Expertise in SQL Server, including schema design, stored procedures, performance tuning, and optimization.
• Hands-on experience with Azure cloud services, including App Service, Functions, Blob Storage, Key Vault, and related services.
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, source control systems, and automated deployment processes.
• Familiarity with modern web technologies, including HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, and front-end integrations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to balance quality, scalability, and delivery timelines.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience integrating AI services, Large Language Models (LLMs), generative AI platforms, or machine learning APIs into enterprise applications.
• Familiarity with tools such as GitHub Copilot, Azure AI Services, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI APIs, or similar AI development platforms.
• Experience designing AI-assisted workflows, intelligent automation solutions, or knowledge management systems.
• Background in payment gateway integrations (Stripe, Authorize.net, Heartland, etc.).
• Experience with workflow automation systems and reporting engines.
• Familiarity with SaaS and multi-tenant application architectures.
• Knowledge of authentication, authorization, cybersecurity, and data protection best practices.
• Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives.
• Understanding of responsible AI principles, model governance, and AI security considerations.
