Summary of Position
We are seeking a seasoned Staff Engineer with 10+ years of experience in building and scaling enterprise applications to help us reimagine the future of care delivery. In this role, you will lead the architecture, design, and technical direction of a small, fast-moving team with the backing and stability of an established company. You have broad experience in technical delivery and taking responsibility, along with a willingness to lead, learn, and adapt as required. This is a unique opportunity with significant real-world scale.
Your first mission will be to rebuild a core legacy system from the ground up using modern technologies. This foundational work is highly visible and critical to our success. From day one, you will have a direct line of influence on the product's direction. The technical challenges are substantial, but the potential human impact is even greater. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture, design, and hands-on development of entirely new systems and products
- Drive the modernization effort by understanding the legacy system end-to-end and guiding the migration from legacy systems to a clean, modern architecture
- Identify what to rebuild, what to retire, and how to do it efficiently and sustainably
- Contribute to the code base and code reviews, setting the tone for engineering excellence
- Help produce new implementations, making them reliable, maintainable, and ready to scale
- Ensure seamless integration with existing platforms and products used across Teladoc Health
- Supervise and support a small, focused team of frontend, backend, and automation engineers
- Work closely with product team to turn ideas into clear strategies and successful execution
- Collaborate with teams across the organization to explore, prototype, and prove out technologies that will shape the future of care
- Own and evolve CI/CD pipelines to support fast and reliable delivery

Qualifications Expected for Position
- 10+ years of experience building scalable, mission-critical distributed systems
- Proven expertise in software architecture, system design, and technical strategy
- Deep experience with Java and Spring Boot with a strong focus on building scalable, cloud-native systems
- Strong proficiency in React, React Native, or similar modern web/mobile frameworks
- Advanced knowledge of relational databases, including schema design and performance tuning
- Experience with Azure or other major cloud platforms and cloud-native development
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Expertise in designing and scaling microservices architectures
- Familiarity with event-driven systems and tools like Kafka
- Skilled in data modeling, ORMs, and data management best practices
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and drive engineering initiatives
- Experience modernizing legacy codebases and managing large-scale system migrations
- Excellent communicator and collaborator across cross-functional teams
- Strong technical leadership skills and stakeholder management while working in an ambiguous environment
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Domain-Driven Design principles
- Experience with Ruby on Rails, GraphQL (legacy system)
- Understanding of FHIR or other healthcare interoperability standards
- Familiarity with Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI)
- Background in regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, finance, government)

- A final chat with our VP of Commercial Strategy & Product to discuss culture, vision, and how you’d contribute at a strategic level
