2. About the Opportunity:
The Senior Software Engineer I on the Octothorpe team will focus on advancing the internal engineering platform by strengthening CI/CD systems, leading Ruby/Rails platform upgrades, and standardizing authentication and authorization across services. This role involves solving complex problems, leading initiatives from design through deployment, and supporting cross-functional collaboration to enhance developer autonomy and platform reliability.
3. Responsibilities:
- Own and enhance CI/CD tooling with guardrails, automation, and reusable patterns
- Improve Backstage as a developer portal for CI/CD visibility and self-service workflows
- Optimize developer feedback loops by reducing pipeline flakiness and speeding up builds/tests
- Provide operational support for release tooling, including triage and incident prevention
- Lead or contribute to Ruby and Rails upgrade efforts across the monolith and ecosystem
- Coordinate cross-repository changes including application code, Docker/CI images, and shared gems
- Develop safe rollout plans with staged deployments, canaries, and rollback options
- Build self-service tooling and standardized workflows enabling teams to manage their own infra, config, and auth changes
- Standardize and operationalize authentication/authorization patterns across environments
- Partner with service teams to encourage platform adoption and support migrations
- Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve delivery speed and quality
- Promote safe and effective adoption of AI tools by sharing best practices
4. Requirements:
- Experience with CI/CD and release engineering tools such as Buildkite and Backstage
- Familiarity with ArgoCD and Kubernetes
- Proficiency in Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Bundler, and dependency management
- Experience with runtime and framework upgrades (Ruby and Rails)
- Knowledge of Auth0 or similar identity providers, OAuth/OIDC, and machine-to-machine authentication
- Exposure to Terraform and infrastructure-as-code (preferred)
- Skills in observability, on-call support, and incident analysis
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) and sharing best practices
- Working knowledge of platform-as-a-service (PAAS) environments
5. Pay Range and Compensation Package:
- Position Base Range - Salary Range $127,000 to $191,000 plus bonus potential
