The position

The Sympower Data ML team is dedicated to delivering energy bidding and trading solutions, including forecasting and optimization services. We work closely with the Trading team to develop these solutions and collaborate across the Technology department to seamlessly integrate our data services into the broader Sympower software ecosystem.

As a Quantative Developer (Power Markets) focused on energy trading and optimization, your primary focus will be to deliver market-relevant forecasts and revenue-optimizing strategies to stakeholders, leveraging your comprehensive skill set in quantitative modelling. The role involves designing and fully implementing scalable, reusable machine learning software and data pipelines for specific projects. It also entails engaging in innovative, experimental initiatives and embracing an iterative approach to develop and test market-impactful ideas for the benefit of the Trading Team.

We are seeking a skilled professional to expand and fine-tune our energy trading-focused forecasting and optimization services around wholesale trading, balancing markets such as FCR, mFRR, and the imbalance mechanism. Your role will involve crafting new quantitative models and trading intelligence products and refining existing ones, ensuring the consistent enhancement and robustness of our algorithmic decision-making and revenue optimisation engine at Sympower.

What you will do

During your daily job, you will:

  • Take ownership of implementing production-worthy, scalable machine learning models, with a focus on forecasting, optimisation and trading strategies use cases.
  • Conduct quantitative research and backtesting to demonstrate the value of forecasting, trading signal generation, and optimisation models to stakeholders.
  • Develop batch and streaming machine learning pipelines with the full Databricks stack, with a strong focus on software engineering best practices.

You will work with our tech stack: Databricks, Python, Polars, PySpark, Delta Lake, Pyomo

Leveraging your effective communication skills, you will collaborate with the Data Product Manager and Trading Team on how the models can bring the most value to Sympower especially in the context of energy market participation and trading decisions. Your role will involve close collaboration with other members of the Data teams, predominantly other Machine Learning and Data Engineers and occasionally Analytics Engineers, ensuring end-to-end delivery to the other Sympower teams, the Sympower platform and our customers.

What you will need

  • Experience working at a BRP and/or a trading/optimisation company where you implemented forecasting, trading and optimisation algorithms for energy assets such as batteries, renewables assets or demand response assets.
  • Experience with building scalable data modelling pipelines, preferably with Databricks and Python (Polars, PySpark, Delta Lake, Pyomo).
  • Familiar with methods for improving model performance and designing and evaluating metrics that help evaluate the model performance in a trading business context
  • A software-engineering mindset, approach and skillset. This includes experience with git, CI/CD, testing frameworks, and DevOps.
  • Experience and affinity with mentoring and coaching other team members, helping them to grow.
  • Good stakeholder communication and being comfortable presenting or facilitating meetings with different audiences, using the right level of detail.
  • Experience driving a project from start to end, including planning, task breakdown, discussions with stakeholders and working together with product management.
  • Challenging and steering the team’s technical and product roadmap.
  • Affinity for working in a fast-paced/growing scale-up company. You are a fast learner and can adapt quickly to new circumstances.
  • Fluent in English and other languages are nice to have.
  • A quantitative education background, ideally econometrics/operations research /mathematics/AI/etc.
