About The Role

The User Experience (UX) Designer position at LMI is a critical role supporting a Defense Agency’s personnel process modernization and technical talent acquisition initiatives. The ideal candidate will utilize human-centered design and service design methodologies to comprehensively understand and improve the experiences of employees, applicants, supervisors, hiring managers, process owners, technical leaders, and senior stakeholders across organizational and system boundaries. Working within a collaborative, cross-functional team, the UX Designer will leverage LMI’s Magnify framework to assess current service experiences, synthesize findings, envision innovative service solutions, and support their implementation. This role requires a highly skilled researcher and facilitator capable of translating complex personnel workflows and stakeholder needs into clear, validated, and actionable service improvements. The position demands an active Secret clearance, emphasizing the importance of security and confidentiality in handling sensitive personnel data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human-centered design, human-computer interaction, service design, design research, psychology, anthropology, information science, or a related field, with at least five years of relevant professional experience. Additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Proven experience conducting user research and applying human-centered or service design methods within complex organizational environments.
  • Experience developing personas, journey maps, workflow maps, service blueprints, wireframes, prototypes, and research synthesis products.
  • Ability to plan, facilitate, and analyze interviews, workshops, co-design sessions, usability tests, and stakeholder reviews.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret qualitative and quantitative data, identify root causes, and formulate actionable recommendations.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including product owners, visual designers, subject matter experts, data or technology professionals, and senior stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with collaborative research and design tools such as Figma, FigJam, Miro, Adobe Creative Suite, or comparable platforms.
  • Excellent written, verbal, visual, facilitation, and client engagement skills, capable of communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple activities, and adapt to evolving priorities in a mission-focused environment.
  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to meet government security, suitability, and system access requirements.
  • Active SECRET clearance is mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct comprehensive user research through interviews, contextual inquiries, observations, workshops, surveys, document reviews, and operational data analysis.
  • Identify key stakeholder groups and develop research-based personas representing applicants, employees, supervisors, hiring managers, process owners, and leadership.
  • Map end-to-end personnel and recruiting journeys, including touchpoints, handoffs, systems, decision points, delays, rework loops, and pain points experienced by users.
  • Create detailed service blueprints and workflow maps that connect user experiences to supporting processes, policies, roles, data flows, and technologies.
  • Synthesize research findings into themes, opportunity areas, root-cause analyses, and validated problem statements to inform service improvements.
  • Facilitate co-design sessions with HR stakeholders and mission organizations to develop practical future-state workflows and service concepts.
  • Design wireframes, prototypes, and other artifacts at appropriate fidelity levels to test concepts and support stakeholder decision-making.
  • Plan and execute concept validation and usability testing, documenting insights and refining designs based on user feedback and operational constraints.
  • Partner with technical talent acquisition and workforce management teams to assess and enhance candidate and hiring manager experiences.
  • Collaborate with product owners and visual designers to translate research findings into prioritized backlog items, roadmaps, decision products, and implementation strategies.
  • Maintain comprehensive research documentation, including plans, notes, repositories, findings, and design rationales, while ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive personnel information.
  • Communicate research insights and service recommendations effectively to operational teams, technical stakeholders, and senior leadership through written reports, presentations, and visual summaries.
