About The Role
The Staff Software Engineer for Retirement at Gusto plays a pivotal role in developing and maintaining the systems that enable thousands of businesses to offer and manage 401(k) retirement plans for their employees. This is a highly technical, hands-on role that involves owning full-stack services and APIs from conception through deployment, ensuring robust, scalable, and reliable solutions. The engineer will collaborate closely with product managers, compliance teams, and operations to translate complex financial and legal requirements into seamless software functionalities. The role demands problem-solving expertise, a commitment to quality, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams to deliver impactful features. Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of building and deploying production-grade products or platforms.
- Proficiency in designing, developing, and maintaining APIs and services.
- Extensive experience with message-based systems such as Sidekiq, SQS, NServiceBus, or similar technologies.
- Strong knowledge of GraphQL and modern frontend frameworks like React.
- Hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails or comparable backend frameworks.
- Ability to own entire systems, including operational support and production troubleshooting.
- Experience working collaboratively with product managers and cross-functional teams to deliver scoped projects.
- Pragmatic, execution-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering high-quality solutions.

Responsibilities

- Identify opportunities to enhance and extend existing system architectures to support new capabilities and compliance requirements.
- Establish and promote engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, and operational procedures.
- Collaborate with product, design, and operations teams to scope work, prioritize tasks, and deliver high-quality, production-ready solutions.
- Debug and resolve production issues, improving system reliability, observability, and operational tooling.
- Work with other engineering teams to integrate shared systems and platforms, ensuring seamless interoperability.
- Write clear, well-tested, and reliable code that scales efficiently and ships rapidly.
- Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to the continuous improvement of the technical stack.
- Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of learning and innovation within the team.
