About The Role

As a Lead Machine Learning Engineer within Capital One's Risk Technology division, you will play a pivotal role in developing and deploying proprietary AI-powered risk management solutions. You will collaborate closely with our Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) team and cross-functional partners across the organization to create innovative systems that leverage state-of-the-art AI technologies. Your work will directly impact our ability to proactively manage risks, prevent issues before they affect our customers or business, and enhance our overall risk mitigation strategies. This role involves a blend of engineering, modeling, and data engineering activities, requiring a strong technical foundation and strategic mindset. You will lead efforts to design, develop, and optimize machine learning models, build robust data pipelines, and ensure the deployment of scalable, responsible AI solutions. Your contributions will help shape the long-term AI roadmap at Capital One, ensuring our systems are cutting-edge, governable, and aligned with industry best practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related field
• Minimum 6 years of experience designing and building data-intensive solutions using distributed computing frameworks (internship experience excluded)
• At least 4 years of programming experience with Python, Scala, or Java
• At least 2 years of experience in building, scaling, and optimizing machine learning systems
• Proficiency with industry-recognized ML frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, Dask, Spark, or TensorFlow
• Experience developing AI and ML algorithms using Python
• Strong understanding of ML modeling techniques, data pipelines, and model monitoring
• Experience with deploying scalable AI/ML solutions in cloud environments such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
• Knowledge of Responsible and Explainable AI practices and model governance
• Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional teams including engineers, data scientists, product managers, and designers to deliver AI-powered products that enhance operational workflows and customer value
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including models, inference engines, and guardrails
• Fine-tune, evaluate, and improve machine learning and foundation models to meet business needs
• Collaborate within Agile teams to create and enhance AI-driven software solutions using the latest ML capabilities
• Contribute to the strategic vision and technical roadmap for AI systems at Capital One
• Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies to build scalable solutions
• Make informed decisions regarding ML infrastructure, including model retraining, monitoring, and governance
• Construct and maintain optimized data pipelines to support ML models
• Ensure all code adheres to security standards, governance policies, and responsible AI practices
