About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff AI/ML Future Sensing Engineer to join our Embodied AI organization at General Motors. This full-time position offers the flexibility of remote or hybrid work arrangements across multiple locations including Sunnyvale, California; Washington; California; and New York. As a senior individual contributor, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our autonomous driving systems by developing and deploying machine learning solutions that enhance sensing architectures and perception capabilities. Your work will directly influence the future of autonomous vehicle technology by supporting safe, reliable, and efficient perception systems that operate seamlessly across diverse real-world scenarios. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, contribute to technical strategies, and mentor engineers to foster innovation and technical excellence within the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong experience building and scaling AI/ML systems for perception, autonomy, robotics, or similar real-world applications
  • Proficiency in modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and strong programming skills in Python
  • Experience with model training pipelines, large-scale data workflows, and infrastructure for efficient model iteration
  • Expertise in data processing tools such as NumPy, Pandas, and Apache Spark
  • Hands-on experience with perception pipelines involving cameras, lidar, radar, or related modalities
  • Ability to define and evaluate metrics for perception and autonomy systems
  • Strong communication skills for effective cross-team collaboration
  • Experience in deploying ML models for production environments and end-to-end deployment workflows

Preferred qualifications include experience in robotics or autonomous driving systems, system integration across sensors and compute, simulation and synthetic data workflows, and technical leadership experience including mentoring and project management.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement AI/ML solutions aligned with GM’s autonomous driving and future sensing objectives
  • Lead end-to-end technical studies on sensor selection, configuration, placement, and multi-modal sensor fusion
  • Architect and evaluate perception models for detection, tracking, localization, semantic labeling, and uncertainty estimation
  • Develop and refine metrics to compare sensor configurations and evaluate system performance
  • Lead model development efforts including data curation, training, validation, and performance optimization
  • Partner with simulation teams to define synthetic data and sensor-model requirements for testing under adverse conditions
  • Drive system integration considerations across sensing, calibration, compute, and vehicle constraints
  • Translate architecture questions into concrete experiments, technical recommendations, and evidence packages
  • Build infrastructure, pipelines, and tooling to support large-scale data processing and model iteration
  • Support the technical execution from prototyping to production deployment, documenting best practices and lessons learned
  • Mentor and collaborate with engineering teams to foster technical growth and knowledge sharing
