Senior Software Engineer - Data Systems

We are partnered with a heavily-funded AI startup who operate in highly regulated, mission-critical sectors including defense, aerospace, and semiconductors. They are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with a strong data systems focus to join their engineering team. You will be working alongside some of the best builders and operators in the industry, in an organization who have grown to $1bn+ in valuation in just 3 years.

This is a product-focused backend engineering position centered on data architecture and domain modelling. The successful candidate will design and maintain relational data models, SQL schemas, and backend services, with a particular emphasis on encoding business rules and operational logic into well-structured, data-driven systems rather than hard-coded application logic.

You will Design and evolve relational schemas, constraints, migrations, and query patterns in PostgreSQL and will define data contracts between services, APIs, and ingestion pipelines. You will also lead the build ingestion and normalzsation workflows for structured and semi-structured data and will translate complex business rules into configurable data structures (rules tables, lookup models, eligibility checks, etc.).

Key skills required:

• 4+ Years' experience in Software Engineering - strong focus on Data Systems
• Proven Backend Engineering experience on production systems
• Deep PostgreSQL expertise and strong SQL skills (CTEs, views, aggregations etc)
• Experience with Python, SQLAlchemy, and Alembic (or comparable ORM/migration tooling)
• Ability to model complex domains and represent business logic in data structures
• Strong communication skills; comfortable working with engineers and non-technical stakeholders

Experience with rule engines, policy systems, or configuration-driven logic and/or a background in complex operational domains (logistics, simulation, defence, geospatial) would be a strong bonus.
