The short version

We're looking for a designer who asks "why" before "what size?"

Story and Fields is a strategic, nimble, creative ad and communications agency in Fargo. We build brands, tell stories, and propel growth for clients who expect Fortune 500 thinking without all the hoops. We're a small crew, which means the work is varied, the pace can be quick, and you get full autonomy of your creative work.

As our Senior Graphic Designer, you'll be a driving creative force across brand, campaign, and digital work — reporting to the Creative Director and partnering closely with our Graphic Designer, production artists, marketing team, clients, and vendors to bring strategic solutions to life from conception to launch.

What you'll do

  • Provide expert design solutions across the full range of our internal and client-facing work: brand identity and systems, campaign concepts, digital advertising, email and social, print and OOH, packaging, environmental, presentation and pitch materials, and more
  • Translate strategy into creative. You'll sit in on the brief, understand the business problem, and design toward it
  • Concept alongside the Creative Director and contribute real ideas in brainstorms, not just execution after the fact
  • Take projects from concept to launch: research and planning, design, revisions, file prep, and QA on the final product
  • Build and steward brand guidelines and design systems that maintain across channels and drive consistency for consumers
  • Design with a performance-based approach driven by measurable goals
  • Present and defend your work to clients and internal teams; clearly, professionally, and with sound reasoning behind creative choices
  • Absorb and act on feedback from clients, the Creative Director, and leadership
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines at once, flagging risk early and adjusting priority as needed
  • Collaborate with photographers, videographers, printers, developers, and other outside partners
  • Keep our craft current. Bring new tools, techniques, and references to the team

What you bring

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in design, marketing, advertising, communications, art, or a related field
  • 6+ years of professional design experience, ideally including agency or in-house creative team work
  • A portfolio (either website or presentation) that shows range, craft, and strategic thinking. We want to see the reasoning as much as the result
  • Expert command of Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Fluency in Figma
  • Familiarity with project management systems such as Asana, Monday, Trello
  • Strong typography, layout, color, and brand systems fundamentals
  • Working knowledge of print production: prepress, color management, paper, finishing, vendor handoff
  • Proven ability to run a project end to end and hit fast-moving deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills. I.e. you can explain a design decision to a client who "just doesn't love that color"

Bonus points

  • Motion design and animation (After Effects or similar) is highly favored for this position
  • Web design experience and familiarity with web dev collaboration
  • Dynamic and display ad design, including templated and resizable systems
  • Thoughtful use of AI tools throughout the creative process — as an accelerant, not a substitute
  • Photo and/or video editing capabilities

Who thrives here

The people who do well at Story and Fields:

  • Are strategic designers — they understand the "why" behind every creative decision and can articulate it
  • Are passionate storytellers who believe good design and intentional copywriting is in service of a story worth telling
  • Wear many hats willingly, and find that energizing rather than exhausting
  • Are genuinely collaborative; generous with ideas, direct with feedback, and receptive to alternative opinions
  • Take feedback well and use it as a tool for improvement
  • Move quickly when needed, without cutting corners on craft
