Skyloom is a telecommunications company founded with the mission to develop, deploy, and operate one of the fundamental pieces of tomorrow's digital infrastructure to provide data transport services on a planetary scale. We design, build, and lay the space-based equivalent of towers (satellites), fiber (lasercom), routers, and switches, enabling fiberless orbital networks to offer high-capacity data plans. Skyloom is a platform for human creativity, ingenuity, and innovation. Our team of high-performance engineers has come together to accomplish wonders.

With a strong sense of purpose, focus, urgency, and willingness to compete, our team is enchanted by the romantic nature of space endeavors and captivated by the potential we see in the stars. Space technology is entering its industrialization phase; craftsmen are being replaced by assembly lines to achieve production volumes in the tens of thousands. All services and products are engineered and constructed in-house. Vertical integration and a quick rollout of comms technology, equipment, and infrastructure are at the core of our strategy to maintain cost, schedule, quality, and performance and deliver on our promise of becoming a true planetary society.

Job Description

We are seeking a Semi Senior/Senior Flight Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and deploy safety-critical, high-reliability software for spacecraft optical payload. This role requires deep technical expertise in real-time operating systems, low-level hardware interaction, and rigorous verification processes. You will be part of the team responsible for the entire software lifecycle, from requirements definition and architectural design through in-flight operations verification support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement flight software applications and drivers using C/C++, adhering to strict coding standards for safety-critical environments.
  • Develop robust, portable, and efficient code targeting resource-constrained embedded processors and leveraging a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) or embedded Linux.
  • Collaborate closely with Hardware (HW) and FPGA design teams to define, implement, and verify low-level interfaces and drivers.
  • Contribute to the overall Flight Software architecture, ensuring modularity, fault tolerance, and deterministic performance.
  • Execute comprehensive verification and validation (V&V) activities, including continuous integration and testing using unit testing, Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Develop and maintain simulation environments and test scripts (often in Python) used for system-level testing and anomaly investigation.
  • Support early hardware integration by bringing up flight processors and peripherals in laboratory testbeds.
  • Develop tools and scripts to analyze telemetry, logs, and fault data.
  • Manage source code integrity and collaboration using Git
  • Design efficient build processes using building tools (e.g. CMake).
  • Ensure adherence to industry safety and quality standards.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, design documents, and test reports.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Core Languages: Expert proficiency in C and strong capability in C++ for embedded development.
  • Operating Systems: Extensive experience developing on or customizing a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) (e.g., VxWorks, FreeRTOS, RTEMS, eCos) or Embedded Linux.
  • Version Control & Build: Expert proficiency with Git and experience with automated build systems (CMake, Makefiles).
  • Testing: Demonstrated experience with Unit Testing and robust debugging using tools like GDB or JTAG/hardware debuggers.
  • Design: Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles in the context of embedded systems.
  • Linux: Proficiency in the Linux environment for development, testing, and system administration tasks.

Desirable skills & Experience

  • V&V Methodologies: Hands-on experience designing and operating Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testbeds.
  • Observability Stacks: Familiarity with data visualization and logging platforms (e.g., Grafana, ELK Stack, InfluxDB).
  • Domain Protocols: Familiarity with common spacecraft communication protocols (e.g., SpaceWire, SPI, MIL-STD-1553, CAN Bus).
  • Scripting: Proficiency in Python for automated testing, data analysis, and tool development.
  • Fluency in English: both written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to travel to USA.

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience: Minimum 5+ years of professional experience in safety-critical embedded software development, defense, or space systems.

This job will provide extensive learning and training opportunities to enable you to expand your skillset significantly and fulfil your career aspirations whilst making a positive impact on the organization.
