The Senior Systems Engineer will provide technical expertise in system architecture, design, integration, and technical management. This role includes leading teams in developing application and technical plans, supporting customers with product installation, optimization, and troubleshooting, and resolving critical issues. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of NIST SP 800-128 and NIST SP 800-53 security controls as they relate to system and product configuration management, with proven experience applying these within the VA OIT environment.

Position Responsibilities

Collaborate with Configuration Management to establish baselines for systems and their deployment needs
Create checklists for the assessment and validation of system and database architecture as it relates to programming, human factors engineering, security, software engineering, web design, and testing
Perform analysis relative to the design of applications or system software that incorporates interfaces with other products and for future flexibility and expandability for each product
Define the discovery, interaction, and communication technologies joining disparate system and information providers
Provide technical input to the systems engineering processes and help establish standards
Provide requirements analysis and content to ensure requirements and resulting solutions are taking a system view
Perform systems assurance assessments and record findings
Identify deficiencies in hardware and software products and requirements, record risks associated with those deficiencies, and advise mitigation strategies
Advise the product owner regarding system use, capacity planning operations, and performance management
Collaborate with Software/System Architecture to ensure bi-directional alignment between the architecture and the systems
Perform system gap analysis to identify areas of weakness
Provide content for system-related user stories and non-functional requirements to ensure continuous improvement and compliance of the system
Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of CI/CD automation within system and product development processes, including CM and testing.
Expertise in framework design, systems and product development, pipeline structure/options, and automating processes, analyze systems and products to identify automation opportunities (including test execution).
Expertise in system and product development and automation (with strong experience in systems engineering, integration, architecture, and Cloud services) to troubleshoot and spot technical and integration issues.
Experience with maintaining repositories and databases such as Structured Query Language (SQL), Microsoft (MS) SQL, Oracle, Azure DevOps, and CMDB repositories.
Expertise in development/testing/automation tools and their implementation.
Expertise with scripting languages such as JavaScript, YAML, Perl, Ruby, Python, PHP, Groovy, Bash.
Expertise with IT industry CI/CD and open-source tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Selenium, Xray, Git, GitHub, Bash, Jenkins, OpenShift/Kubernetes, ServiceNow, Rancher, Docker, SonarQube, Terraform, Vagrant, JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), Maven, Gradle, and Another Neat Tool (ANT).
Expertise with open-source technologies and cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
Experience with NIST SP 800-53, and NIST SP 800-128 standards.
Translate and/or document/diagram recommendations and deliverables for CM automation for incorporation into CI/CD pipelines.
Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and diagramming applications

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience.
5 years of relevant experience as a software/systems architect for large systems.
Experience working in the Department of Veterans Affairs
Agile / SAFe experience [desired].
Active VA Public Trust clearance (preferred)
Must be able to get and maintain a government Public Trust.
