About the Role:

Our Engineering, Product, and Design (EPD) team is at the forefront of building Ascend’s modern platform — powering the technological transformation that the accounting industry needs. We’ve identified and validated the problem space, our goals are crystal clear, and every day here brings an exciting challenge.

We’re looking for an Intermediate Engineer | Senior Engineer (4–9 years’ experience) who is highly driven and self-motivated. In this hands-on technical leadership role, you’ll work across the stack — from APIs and databases to cloud infrastructure and AI integrations — while raising the bar on code quality, security, and performance.

As part of the EPD team, you’ll design, build, and deliver systems that power our AI-driven platform, mentor teammates, and help accelerate product velocity.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and ship performant, scalable, and secure software systems end-to end
• Implement production-ready features and services, ensuring reliability and robustness
• Drive engineering excellence through code quality, testing, extensibility, and maintainability
• Collaborate with product and design counterparts to define the best implementation strategies
• Lead, coach, and mentor engineers, helping them grow in their careers
• Explore and apply foundational and large language models, evaluating accuracy and integrating them into production systems
• Continuously improve developer velocity by refining workflows, tools, and practices
• Take full ownership of features from idea to production to iteration, ensuring they deliver impact

What We’re Looking For (Qualifications)

Leadership & Impact

• Proven record of leading complex, cross-team engineering initiatives and driving them to success
• Ability to define and evolve technical architecture for long-term scalability and reliability
• Experience improving engineering culture, standards, and developer velocity across teams
• Strong communication and influencing skills; able to partner with executives, product, and design leaders
• Background in product companies, with exposure to real data, traffic, and growth at scale

Technical Expertise

• Strong problem-solving skills and hands-on coding in Elixir, Python, or Ruby
• Experience with frameworks (Django, Rails, Phoenix) and relational databases (modeling, querying, optimization)
• Familiarity with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Gemini, etc.) and AI-assisted tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude, Codex)
• Building and scaling systems on AWS (S3, RDS, EC2, Lambda, ECS, etc.)
• Solid understanding of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD practices (GitHub Actions)
• Skilled in designing APIs (OpenAPI/Swagger) and building resilient integrations with third-party APIs (rate limiting, retries, error handling)
• Writes robust, secure, and performant code that is well-tested and production ready

Bonus

• Experience with Intelligent Document Processing
• Familiarity with LangChain or LangSmith
