Role Overview:

Reporting to the Executive Director, Strategy & Change, Director of Marketing & Communications at Scouts Canada, this role is responsible for ensuring the organization’s reputation is strengthened, its story is widely understood, and its reach is expanded, so that more families join, more adults volunteer, and more stakeholders invest in the movement. By leading integrated strategies across brand, marketing, internal communications, and media relations, the Director ensures that Scouts Canada is visible, trusted, and positioned for long-term growth. They champion the use of evidence and user insights to shape campaigns and narratives, embedding the needs and experiences of youth, volunteers, and staff into every communication.

The Director also plays a key role in protecting and enhancing the organization’s reputation, ensuring timely, transparent, and compelling messaging in both proactive and reactive contexts. They oversee the measurement of brand and marketing effectiveness, providing the data and insights needed to refine strategies and prioritize user needs. In collaboration with the Commercial Ventures Team, the Director helps package and position the organization’s work for external support, aligning opportunities with donor and partner priorities.

As a Senior Leader, the Director builds and supports a high-performing team, strengthens collaboration between staff and volunteers, and represents the organization with credibility to the media and senior external stakeholders

Duties and Responsibilities:

Portfolio:

·       Brand: Create and drive strategies that strengthen Scouts Canada’s brand by increasing familiarity and the likelihood of adults volunteering, families joining, and stakeholders offering support.

·       Marketing: Create and drive strategies to increase the number of young people and adult volunteers recruited, and revenue generated through retail, properties and fundraising, as a result of Scouts Canada's external reputation and marketing efforts.

·       Internal Communications: Create and Drive strategies to increase adult volunteer satisfaction with support from Scouts Canada, as a result of timely, segmented and effective internal communications.

·       Media Relations: Lead proactive and reactive media relations strategies that improve public perception, support recruitment of volunteers and members, revenue generation, and protect Scouts Canada’s reputation.

·       Evidence, Insights and User Needs: Create and drive strategies to collect and share evidence related to external and internal perceptions of our brand and marketing effectiveness, which leads to more effective decision making and the prioritization of relevant user needs.

Leadership:

  • Deputy Executive Director: Deputize for the Executive Director during absences.
  • Externality: Represent the organization to senior external stakeholders and agencies.
  • Senior Leadership: Collaborate with Director-level colleagues to ensure the success of Scouts Canada's work.
  • People: Create and drive strategies to continuously improve the performance of staff within your team, increase the satisfaction of high-performing staff with their role, and take swift action where performance is below expectations.
  • Volunteers: Continuously improve partnerships between staff and national volunteers.
  • Board and Committees: Form excellent relationships with members of any relevant committees and provide clear and concise advice and guidance up to and including Board level.
  • Project Management: Ensure all projects within the team align with our Project Management framework, taking personal accountability for addressing underperformance in Scope, Timeline or Budget.

Finance and Revenue:

·       Finance: Effectively manage and report on $1-$10M team and project budgets, collaborating with senior colleagues to ensure value for money.

·       Revenue: Create and drive strategies to package the teams work so that fundraising colleagues can secure externally funded partnerships.

Qualifications and Job-Specific Competencies:

·       5 to 7 years’ related experience in marketing & communications.

·       2+ years as a senior leader in similar sectors.

·       Post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience in Marketing and Communications.

·       Brand & Marketing: Experience designing and delivering integrated brand and marketing strategies that strengthen reputation, attract volunteers and families, and drive revenue growth through fundraising, retail, and partnerships.

·       Internal & External Communications: Skilled at crafting compelling narratives, leading proactive and reactive media relations, and developing segmented communications that improve satisfaction and trust among staff, volunteers, and the public.

·       Evidence & Insights: Experienced in gathering and analyzing data on brand and marketing effectiveness, translating insights into actionable strategies that meet user needs and improve decision-making.

·       Leadership & Management: Proven senior leader who deputizes at the executive level, engages effectively with boards and external stakeholders, and builds high-performing teams and strong staff–volunteer partnerships.

·       Finance & Revenue: Strong financial acumen in managing $1–10M budgets and drives revenue growth through marketing, ensuring strong returns on investments.

Working Conditions:

·       Works remotely from home

·       Traditional working hours with some non-traditional working hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required

·       Some overnight travel required.

·       Clear PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) are required before the start date.

·       Mandatory training requirement.

Physical Demands:

·       Sitting at a computer for extended periods of time
