This team is dedicated to developing early-stage AI prototypes to explore innovative solutions and accelerate experimentation across our organization.

Role Responsibilities

As a Senior Data Scientist / AI Engineer, you will play a critical role in advancing AI experimentation at Sanoma Learning. You will report to the Senior Director, Head of Data and AI. This position is designed for a senior technical expert who can lead the development of impactful prototypes (PoCs/MVPs) using cutting-edge AI tools – especially in the domains of Generative AI and LLMs.

In this role, you turn business needs into well-scoped AI experiments, build functional prototypes, and work closely with cross-functional teams including product owners, engineers, project managers, and analysts across Sanoma Learning’s operating companies.

This is a highly hands-on position that fits you if you are a technically strong and curious AI engineer who enjoys experimenting, iterating quickly, and transforming new ideas into real value for learners and educators.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy PoCs and MVPs using cutting-edge AI techniques, with a strong focus on Generative AI, including LLMs, and agent-based architectures.
• Translate business challenges into well-scoped AI use cases and deliver end-to-end prototypes in collaboration with product and experimentation teams.
• Work hands-on across the stack – from data ingestion and model development to orchestration, deployment, and monitoring.
• Implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines connected to Sanoma Learning content and multi-step reasoning workflows for practical enterprise use.
• Optimize performance and scalability through techniques like prompt tuning, caching, and efficient inference.
• Establish engineering and MLOps best practices, including versioning, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and cloud-native deployment.
• Ensure AI solutions meet data privacy and compliance standards, working closely with legal and security teams.
• Coach junior team members, foster AI engineering best practices, and help build internal capability across Sanoma Learning.
• Contribute to internal knowledge sharing, including documentation, workshops, and reusable component libraries.
• Stay current with AI research and tooling, evaluating emerging technologies and integrating them into experimentation workflows where relevant.

Must-have requirements Education

✅Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

✅Relevant certifications in AI/ML, cloud platforms, or MLOps are a plus.

Experience

✅ 3-5 years of hands-on experience in data science, AI engineering, or applied machine learning roles. ✅ Experience developing PoCs or MVPs using LLMs, transformers, or related GenAI techniques.

✅Familiarity with RAG systems and vector databases.

✅Exposure to cloud-native tools and infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure), Docker/Kubernetes, and orchestration tools like Airflow or Prefect.

✅ Experience implementing or adapting LLM evaluation frameworks is a plus.

✅Understanding of compliance and governance requirements (e.g., GDPR, responsible AI practices).

✅Previous experience in edtech or publishing is a plus.

Skills

✅Deep understanding of transformer-based models, prompt engineering, and generative AI workflows.

✅Strong programming skills in Python, with experience using frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph, OpenAI API.

✅Expertise in retrieval systems, embedding generation, and vector search integration.

✅Competence in building agentic pipelines, integrating tools and services for complex task resolution.

✅Strong command of MLOps principles, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code (IaC) for deploying and maintaining scalable systems.

✅Ability to evaluate model performance using a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques.

✅Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across product, business, and technical teams.
