2. About the Opportunity:
The Staff Software Engineer, Web will lead the technical strategy and architecture for the web platform that powers product discovery and search experiences. This role is responsible for shaping frontend systems to ensure fast, reliable, and personalized customer interactions across multiple product areas. The position involves collaboration across engineering, product, design, and machine learning teams to enhance user engagement and platform performance.
3. Responsibilities:
• Define technical direction for home and search web experiences, including rendering, data fetching, and client performance.
• Develop features to help customers discover new retailers and increase engagement.
• Improve Core Web Vitals, page load speeds, and overall frontend health.
• Enhance SEO and organic discovery to attract new customers.
• Collaborate with machine learning and backend teams to deliver personalized search and recommendations.
• Mentor senior engineers and support growth of engineering capabilities.
4. Requirements:
• Extensive experience in senior or staff engineer roles focused on web systems design and frontend architecture.
• Expertise in modern web technologies such as React, TypeScript, and Next.js.
• Proven ability to design and manage large-scale web platforms across multiple products.
• Deep knowledge of web performance optimization including Core Web Vitals, bundle size, caching, and data fetching.
• Experience leading design reviews and influencing technical decisions across teams.
• Experience supporting large engineering organizations (30+ engineers).
• Strong communication skills for cross-organizational technical strategy influence.
• Proven mentoring experience and ability to drive long-term technical vision.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with search, recommendations, personalization, or related discovery platforms.
• Familiarity with hybrid architectures, webview clients, or cross-platform web rendering.
• Collaboration experience with machine learning, product, and design teams.
• Experience building frontend platforms or design systems for multiple feature teams.
• Understanding of online grocery, marketplace, or e-commerce sectors.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field.
5. Pay Range and Compensation Package:
• Base pay ranges vary by location from $221,000 to $279,000 USD.
• Compensation includes new hire equity grants and annual refresh grants.
• Offers vary based on experience, skills, and other factors.
