Summary
At Remote Crew, we're partnering with a global sleep health company looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join its growing Porto based engineering team. You'll split your time between shaping technical architecture and writing production code inside a Scrum team. This is an individual contributor role for someone who wants real influence over how products get built, not just a seat in design meetings.
Salary: up to €85k / year
Location: Porto, Portugal.
What You'll Do
- Turn Product Requirements Documents into clear Technical Design Documents
- Define architecture, assess feasibility, and estimate effort for new features
- Design scalable, secure microservices running on AWS
- Embed inside one of four Scrum teams as an active developer
- Write production code in Java and Kotlin, with occasional Angular work
- Help your team break architecture plans into user stories and sprint tasks
- Review code and mentor developers to raise the technical bar
- Partner directly with Product Managers to evaluate trade offs before building
- Work with relational (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases
- Support the team's move away from legacy MongoDB toward PostgreSQL
What We're Looking For
- Strong hands on experience building scalable microservices in Java
- Comfort learning Kotlin on the job if you haven't used it yet
- Proven experience with distributed systems and service boundary decisions
- Working knowledge of PostgreSQL and MongoDB
- A track record of writing technical design documents or RFCs
- Experience working in a Scrum or Agile environment
- Ability to explain technical trade offs to non technical stakeholders
- Comfort mentoring developers through code review
- Some exposure to frontend frameworks, ideally Angular
- You must live within about an hour of Porto
Nice to Have
- Experience with AWS and Kubernetes
- CI/CD pipeline experience
- Background in healthcare tech, regulated environments, or SaaS
- Familiarity with sleep diagnostics or medical devices
