Role description 📖

We are looking for a skilled and experienced Senior Back-End Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in the design, development, and maintenance of our platform. You will be responsible for building robust, scalable, and high-performance solutions that power our customers' gifting strategies. You will also be involved in maintaining and enhancing our AWS infrastructure, as well as the tools that enable our engineering team to work efficiently, with your Platform and DevOps skills. You will collaborate closely with other software engineers, product managers, designers, and other business stakeholders, autonomously and as an individual contributor, to deliver the best gifting platform in the world in a scalable and efficient way. This is a senior role but the ideal candidate will still love to role their sleeves up and work as an individual contributor in solving challenging problems!

The role is remote, but the successful candidate must be based in Portugal.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Backend Development: Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, and high-performance backend systems that power our innovative gifting platform. Our stack includes Ruby on Rails, Python, and SQL.
• API Development: Build, enhance, and maintain our public APIs and documentation, adapting to the evolving needs of our customers and internal teams.
• Platform Engineering: Develop and improve internal tools, frameworks, and systems that empower our engineering team and streamline the software development lifecycle.
• Cloud Infrastructure: Manage and optimize our AWS infrastructure to ensure reliability, scalability, and cost-efficiency, aligning with business growth and operational needs.
• Automation & CI/CD: Create, maintain, and enhance automation pipelines, CI/CD workflows, and deployment processes, enabling seamless and reliable software delivery.
• DevOps Practices: Advocate for and implement DevOps best practices, such as monitoring, logging, and incident response, to ensure system reliability and performance. Our current tools include Sentry, DataDog, New Relic, and Sidekiq.
• Technical Leadership: Participate in technical decision-making and contribute to upholding high-quality engineering standards across the team.

About You 🧠

The successful candidate will have:

• Extensive Backend Development Experience: 5+ years of experience in backend software development with a strong understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and best practices.
• Proficiency in Relevant Technologies: Expertise in Ruby on Rails, Python, and SQL, with the ability to write and optimise queries and troubleshoot database issues effectively.
• API Development Skills: Experience designing, building, and maintaining RESTful APIs, including writing clear, user-friendly documentation.
• Cloud Infrastructure Expertise: Strong familiarity with AWS services, with experience optimising infrastructure for scalability, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
• DevOps Practices: Practical experience with CI/CD workflows and deployment processes. Familiarity with monitoring and performance tools such as Sentry, DataDog, New Relic, and Sidekiq.
• Proactive and Hands-On Mindset: A self-starter who takes initiative to identify opportunities for improvement and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves to solve problems, regardless of complexity or scope.
• Problem-Solving Abilities: Demonstrated skill in diagnosing and resolving complex issues in production and test environments.
• Collaboration and Communication Skills: Strong ability to work effectively in a team environment with engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders.
