Key Responsibilities:
UI Systems Design — break features/wireframes down into the necessary widgets, structures and classes; design reusable, extendable widgets
Client out wireframes with the right widget classes so visual designers can start styling
Rapidly prototype UX/Visual designs; translate design needs into technical requirements for programmers
Ensure player input is correctly mapped, responsive, and has appropriate "game feel"
Own UI performance: keep within memory and CPU constraints, profile the cost of UMG / Slate / C++ / texture memory without programmer help
Write Blueprint logic for presentation behavior; consult UI engineers on what belongs in Blueprint vs. native code; assist UI Artists with special presentation behavior
Debug Blueprint/UMG issues fast using fault-isolation techniques
Documentation, organization and workflow improvements for UX, UI Art and UI engineering
Stated ideal background: "basic algebra and geometry math ('Game math')", game systems, and basic programming principles. Visual scripting (Blueprint, Lua, Python). At Principal level the scope becomes Verse and UEFN, complex user theming, technical debt, and building UI systems used internally on Fortnite and exposed to UEFN creators.
Position Requirements:
5–7 years of professional experience as a UI Tech Designer, Technical UI Artist, or similar hybrid design/engineering role, ideally within games
Deep, hands-on experience working in Unreal Engine 5 (UMG, Slate, Blueprints) to build real, shipped UI screens and flows
Strong understanding of style sheeting/style sets and how to apply them consistently across a large set of screens
Proven experience designing and implementing navigation flows and screen-to-screen relationships in a live product
Ability to work from a component/template library and assemble it into cohesive, production-quality experiences
Strong problem-solving skills, particularly around complex, context-dependent navigation and state (e.g., scoped or contextual UI systems)
Solid understanding of UI performance considerations in real-time engines
Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely across art, UX, and engineering disciplines
Comfortable owning ambiguous, foundational problems and driving them to a polished, shippable solution
