The Role:

We are looking for a Senior Scala Developer on behalf of our client to architect, scale, and maintain high-throughput backend services and real-time data processing pipelines. In this role, you will take operational ownership of distributed systems that process complex data streams at scale, applying pure functional programming concepts to ensure resilience, concurrency, and sub-millisecond execution.

What we are looking for:

• 3+ years of dedicated, production-grade software development experience using Scala 2.13 or Scala 3, with a strong command of type-level programming, implicits/givens, pattern matching, and generalized algebraic data types (GADTs).
• Extensive hands-on experience using pure functional effect systems such as Cats Effect or ZIO, or actor-based concurrency frameworks like Akka / Apache Pekko.
• Deep understanding of distributed architectures, message brokers, and event streaming platforms—specifically Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Apache Spark.
• Advanced knowledge of memory management, garbage collection, thread pool tuning, and non-blocking asynchronous I/O patterns on the JVM.
• Solid proficiency in relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, Cassandra) using Scala-native access libraries like Doobie, Quill, Slick, or Skunk.
• Strong daily proficiency with SBT, Docker, Kubernetes, and setting up automated CI/CD deployment pipelines on AWS or GCP.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience migrating legacy Scala 2 codebases to Scala 3.
• Background in high-frequency trading (HFT), FinTech, or large-scale IoT data streaming architectures.
• Experience with Apache Spark for large-scale distributed batch and stream processing.
• Exposure to frontend Scala tooling (Scala.js) or cross-platform compilation.

Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and maintain fault-tolerant microservices and event-driven data pipelines using Scala, Cats Effect/ZIO, and Kafka.
• Profile memory usage and thread allocations to eliminate bottlenecks, ensuring low-latency execution and high fault tolerance under high load.
• Develop type-safe REST, gRPC, and GraphQL APIs alongside streaming pipelines that ingest and process high-volume dataset streams.
• Lead design discussions, enforce strict functional programming paradigms, write automated unit and property-based tests (ScalaTest, ScalaCheck), and conduct rigorous code reviews.
• Collaborate with cloud infrastructure teams to containerize Scala microservices, manage SBT build configurations, and optimize deployment pipelines for Kubernetes.
