Senior Software Engineer — Platform Engineering

Role Overview

This engineer will join the Platform Engineering organization responsible for building internal tooling, frameworks, and paved-road infrastructure that accelerates software delivery across Modern Campus.

The role focuses on building the paved road, not defining platform strategy. Engineers in this role translate architectural guidance and platform direction into practical developer-facing capabilities that simplify and standardize development workflows.

This includes building frameworks, libraries, and automation that support specification-driven and agent-assisted development, improve developer ergonomics, and ensure consistent quality, security, and operational reliability across teams.

The ideal candidate is a systems-minded engineer who enjoys building enabling technology for other engineers and who can reason clearly about system design, developer experience, and long-term maintainability.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement internal platform capabilities that enable consistent development workflows across engineering teams
  • Build frameworks, libraries, automation, and tooling that accelerate product teams and reduce repetitive engineering work
  • Translate platform architecture and strategy into usable developer-facing paved-road solutions
  • Contribute to platform capabilities that enable specification-driven and agent-assisted development workflows
  • Design internal tooling and systems with clear interfaces, contracts, and specifications that allow automated systems and development agents to operate reliably
  • Improve developer productivity through automation, standardized tooling, and clear technical interfaces
  • Ensure platform capabilities support observability, reliability, and operational best practices
  • Collaborate with product teams to ensure platform capabilities integrate naturally into real development practices
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and architectural alignment across teams
  • Identify opportunities to simplify development workflows and reduce engineering cognitive load through opinionated platform solutions

Competencies

  • Strong system design thinking and ability to reason about tradeoffs in distributed SaaS systems
  • Ability to translate architectural guidance into practical, maintainable engineering solutions
  • Experience conceptualizing applications from multiple perspectives including performance, reliability, data integrity, and operational concerns
  • Ability to design systems with clear contracts and well-defined interfaces that enable predictable system behavior
  • Comfort building internal-facing infrastructure, frameworks, and developer tooling
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across Product, Engineering, and QA
  • Self-directed and able to identify missing information required to make sound technical decisions
  • Strong instinct for creating simple, opinionated paved-road solutions that reduce complexity for other engineers
  • Ability to design automation and tooling that validates system behavior early and consistently across the development lifecycle

Engineering Environment Awareness

  • Experience working with cloud-native SaaS architectures and distributed systems
  • Understanding of observability, telemetry, and operational governance in production systems
  • Familiarity with emerging development workflows including AI-assisted and agent-supported engineering tools
  • Appreciation for developer experience and productivity as first-class engineering concerns

  • Build systems with well-defined interfaces and contracts that allow teams and automated systems to reliably integrate with them
  • Apply product engineering thinking to platform work, recognizing that developer adoption is earned by delivering meaningful value, not mandated from above
  • Identify friction in the development lifecycle and design platform improvements that remove it
  • Create automation that improves consistency, reliability, and speed across engineering workflows
  • Balance flexibility and standardization, creating opinionated solutions that reduce cognitive overhead for developers
  • Clearly explain system design decisions and the tradeoffs involved
  • Collaborate effectively with product teams to ensure platform capabilities address real development needs

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of experience in software development
  • 4+ years of experience building software in a cloud-native SaaS environment
  • Experience designing and implementing backend systems or platform services
  • Full-stack experience preferred, with the ability to understand systems from client to infrastructure
  • Experience building internal frameworks, libraries, or developer tooling is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices
  • Experience operating software in cloud environments and containerized infrastructure
