Senior Project Manager – Retail

Location: Birmingham

Salary: £60,000–£70,000

Remote

The Opportunity

An established property consultancy is seeking a Senior Project Manager to join its Birmingham team, focusing on the delivery of retail construction projects.

This role would suit someone who enjoys the pace and variety of retail delivery, understands the importance of trading requirements and opening dates, and can build strong relationships with clients and project teams.

Experience in retail fit-out, refurbishment and multi-site programmes would be particularly relevant, combining practical delivery knowledge with the ability to advise clients throughout the project lifecycle.

The Role

You will take ownership of projects from initial brief and feasibility through design, procurement, construction and handover. Acting as a principal client contact, you will coordinate consultants, contractors and operational stakeholders to deliver against agreed programme, budget and quality objectives.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing client briefs, project scopes, budgets and delivery programmes.
  • Leading retail fit-out, refurbishment and estate improvement projects.
  • Managing multiple commissions and coordinating competing priorities.
  • Appointing and managing design teams, consultants and specialist suppliers.
  • Advising on procurement strategy and overseeing tender processes and contractor selection.
  • Coordinating landlord, tenant and retailer requirements, including approvals and technical interfaces.
  • Planning works around trading activity, access restrictions and operational requirements.
  • Monitoring programme, cost, quality and risk, providing clear reporting and recommendations.
  • Managing changes to scope and assessing their impact on budgets and completion dates.
  • Undertaking contract administration or Employer’s Agent duties where required by the appointment.
  • Chairing project meetings and resolving issues across client, consultant and contractor teams.
  • Overseeing completion, snagging and handover to operational teams.
  • Developing client relationships, supporting repeat business and mentoring junior colleagues.

About You

You will be an experienced Senior Project Manager, or a Project Manager ready to step up, with a strong understanding of construction delivery within the retail sector.

You should bring:

  • A consultancy or client-side Project Management background, or relevant contractor experience with strong client-facing responsibilities.
  • Experience delivering retail fit-out, refurbishment or store development projects.
  • The ability to manage projects from early planning through to completion.
  • Confidence coordinating retailers, landlords, consultants, contractors and specialist suppliers.
  • An understanding of working within live trading environments and delivering to fixed opening dates.
  • Good knowledge of construction procurement and JCT contracts; NEC experience would also be useful.
  • Strong commercial awareness, programme management and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear communication and the confidence to lead meetings and provide practical client advice.

Experience delivering multi-site rollout programmes would be particularly valuable. Candidates with a broader commercial or hospitality fit-out background and relevant retail experience are also encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

A relevant qualification in Project Management, Building Surveying, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or a related discipline would be welcomed.

Professional membership or chartership, such as MRICS, MCIOB or MAPM, would be advantageous, alongside a demonstrable record of successful project delivery.

What the Role Offers

  • A salary of £60,000–£70,000.
  • A Birmingham-based role focused on retail project delivery.
  • Responsibility for leading commissions and managing client relationships.
  • The opportunity to apply your retail expertise within an established property consultancy.
