The Role

This is a rare chance to join a scale-up at the exact moment it is building momentum, working alongside a tight-knit engineering team spread across Northern Ireland, Brazil, Canada, Hungary and Romania. You will pair closely with another engineer on real projects, own backend architecture end to end, and see your decisions land directly in a product used by global enterprise customers. Engineers here use AI heavily in their day-to-day workflow, so you will be building with the same tools that are reshaping how software gets written, not reading about them after the fact. The team wants people who think deeply, communicate clearly and enjoy the pace and ownership that comes with a growing company.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable, high-performance backend systems using Java and/or Go
• Own backend architecture and shape design decisions that improve reliability, maintainability and customer impact
• Lead internal and customer-facing projects through to timely, high-quality delivery
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, analysing system metrics to drive backend efficiency and resilience
• Pair closely with another engineer on shared projects, rotating across the codebase as business needs evolve
• Contribute to collaborative architecture discussions across the wider engineering team
• Use AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Codex to improve engineering workflow and productivity
• Take part in the support and on-call rotation, staying close to real customer issues
• Mentor other engineers and help raise the bar on engineering quality across the team

What You'll Need

Essential:

• Strong professional backend engineering experience, ideally 5+ years; open-minded on exact years, prioritising engineering quality and trajectory over a set number
• Hands-on experience in Java and/or Go, deep enough to explain architecture, trade-offs and the impact of your own decisions
• Practical experience using AI tools as part of your day-to-day engineering workflow
• Strong communication skills and comfort discussing disagreements, trade-offs and stakeholder conversations
• Must be based in Canada

Desirable / Nice to Have:

• Experience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and containerised environments
• Background working in a fast-moving scale-up or product-led environment
