As the job title suggests, this is a multi-faceted role with lots of scope, variety and responsibility.

The role is with one of the world's leading providers of specialist services into the Space sector. You'll be joining a team of 20 or so experienced engineers, at a senior level. The initial focus of the role is a major UK government programme.

The programme isn't solely space-focused but draws on our client's expertise, particularly in Earth Observation. It's a huge programme with hundreds of stakeholders and is centred around a cutting-edge technology platform that deals with enormous volumes of data and transactions. The overall mission of the programme has major implications for the protection and improvement of our environment.

The Senior Software Engineer/Software Architect will undertake a number of roles on the programme: -

• Management and improvement of the underlying infrastructure including cloud services, security, automation
• Developing new web applications and maintaining existing ones, across a range of technologies
• Architecture design for new applications and features
• Team leadership and technical management
• Stakeholder management, authoring of techncial proposals and documentation

Senior Software Engineer/Software Architect - responsibilities in detail

• Infrastructure management - including Azure cloud, Kubernetes clusters, Terraform IaC
• Cloud services - improving performance, security, efficiency
• Hands-on development of new web-based applications, maintenance of existing ones
• Designing the architecture of new applications and features
• Deploying code changes using Azure DevOps, ArgoCD, Buildkite and Github
• Working with geospatial datasets, Geoserver APIs, OGC APIs, ETL pipelines
• Leadership of Agile development teams
• Stakeholder interactions across a range of user groups
• Producing technical proposals and authoring clear documentation

Senior Software Engineer/Software Architect - requirements

• Broad Cloud/Infrastructure/DevOps skills incl. Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Linux
• Strong web application development skills, ideally Typescript, Python, React, FastAPI, PostrgreSQL
• Technical understanding of spatial data, Earth Observation and/or environmental data and GIS
• Investigative mindset with the ability to quickly understand and learn new technologies
• Highly organised, with excellent communication skills

Senior Software Engineer/Software Architect - other info

Our client's main office is in Bedfordshire. Working patterns are flexible and the role can be largely done remotely: you may need to visit once a month, though if you're more local you'd be very welcome in the office more frequently.

In terms of longer term, prospects, our client works on some very exciting projects, such as those funded by the European Space Agency, and you can expect to be taking part in varied, interesting and important work that will stretch your own boundaries and involve genuinely leading-edge technology.
