About the role

The Lead Platform Engineer is responsible for the reliability, scalability, and performance of the core platform.

You will guide architectural direction, lead complex infrastructure initiatives, and drive improvements across deployment pipelines, observability, and systems design.

This role includes contributing hands-on code, serving as the technical escalation point, and partnering with internal teams and external vendors to ensure safe and scalable integrations.

The organization's platform is primarily built in Python and hosted on AWS, incorporating Flask, Pytest, Mypy, Docker, PostgreSQL, SQS, S3, and Terraform.

They deploy daily.

What You’ll Do

Technical Leadership:

  • Own platform architecture and ensure high availability, resilience, and scalability.
  • Lead design and delivery of cross-team projects affecting core infrastructure.
  • Improve deployment workflows, monitoring, and performance across the platform.
  • Anticipate scaling and failure scenarios, ensuring robust system design.
  • Establish and promote best practices in reliability, testing, and operations.
  • Contribute code, conduct reviews, and ship production changes daily.
  • Manage integrations with third-party systems in a secure and repeatable manner.

Collaboration & Team Leadership:

  • Collaborate with product, design, backend, frontend, and trading teams to align platform decisions with business goals.
  • Manage and develop a small engineering team, fostering high performance and strong technical judgment.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization, strengthening delivery, architecture, and decision-making.
  • Lead technical discussions, planning sessions, and delegation to maintain pace and quality.
  • Drive ownership and accountability across the Platform function.
  • Participate in hiring and help shape the platform engineering discipline.
  • Reinforce a culture focused on reliability, quality, and continuous improvement.

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of engineering experience, with deep proficiency in Python and cloud-native systems.
  • Experience leading or managing engineers in platform, backend, or infrastructure roles.
  • Strong track record building scalable, resilient, distributed systems.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous technical problems into clear, actionable plans.
  • Demonstrated impact on improving reliability, performance, and developer experience.
  • Hands-on leadership with strength in both coding and architectural thinking.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
  • Experience integrating third-party systems at scale.
  • Familiarity with modern delivery practices and a strong commitment to quality and testing.
  • Must be based in the UK
