About The Job

We are searching for a creative and analytical Geospatial Data Scientist to join our collaborative data science team. In this exciting role, you will have the opportunity to work with diverse and complex geospatial datasets to solve some of the most pressing challenges in the [re]insurance industry. You will be empowered to:

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret intricate geospatial data to inform critical business decisions.
  • Develop and implement sophisticated risk models and climate analytics.
  • Optimize operational strategies through data-driven insights.
  • Collaborate with a team of experts in a dynamic and supportive environment.

We are looking for a candidate with hands-on experience with GIS platforms, a proven ability to build and maintain geospatial data pipelines, and a strong command of machine learning techniques. A background or familiarity with catastrophe loss estimation concepts will set you up for success in this role. If you are ready to take on a challenging and rewarding position where your work has a real-world impact, we encourage you to apply.

State specific pay scales for this role are as follows:

$105,245 to $199,452 (CA, NJ, NY, WA, HI, AK, MD, CT, RI, MA)

$86,110 to $163,188 (UT, ID, MT, NM, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA, AR, LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, SC, NC, WV)

The expected base salary for this position will vary depending on a number of factors, including relevant experience, skills and location.

Responsibilities

What You'll Achieve:

  • Architect & Automate Data Flow: Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable geospatial data pipelines using Python and open-source libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Rasterio) to ensure a seamless flow of high-quality data for analysis.
  • Master Diverse Geospatial Data: Ingest, clean, and validate a wide array of geospatial data types—from vector and raster to point cloud and tiled indexes (like H3)—transforming raw information into analysis-ready assets.
  • Uncover Hidden Patterns: Apply advanced spatial statistical methods, including spatial clustering and spatiotemporal mining, to identify and model critical patterns and trends that will drive our business strategy.
  • Drive Collaborative Solutions: Partner closely with data scientists, engineers, and business leaders to understand their challenges, define data requirements, and strategically expand our central geospatial data library.
  • Visualize & Communicate Insights: Create compelling interactive visualizations and dashboards with tools like Hex, Kepler.gl, or ArcGIS to translate complex spatial analysis into clear, actionable stories for stakeholders at all levels

Required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geography, Computer Science, Data Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience working with machine learning, geospatial data and GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Carto).
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience using geospatial libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Shapely, Rasterio).

Preferred

  • Experience working in the insurance or reinsurance industry, particularly in roles involving exposure modeling, catastrophe risk, or underwriting analytics.
  • Familiarity with catastrophe modeling platforms (e.g., Verisk Touchstone, Moody’s RMS).
  • Understanding of catastrophe risk concepts and metrics such as Hazard & Vulnerability, EP, TVaR, and AAL.
