Staff Software Engineer

THE OPPORTUNITY

We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer who wants to be at the forefront of AI-enabled engineering, someone who doesn’t just write code to spec, but rethinks how software is designed, built, and evolved using AI.

In this role, you’ll help shape the future of our platform by integrating AI not only into how we build software, but into the product experiences themselves. You’ll work across complex systems to design scalable, intelligent architectures and create AI-enabled features that fundamentally improve our product offering.

This isn’t a ticket-taking role. We’re looking for an engineer with a strong systems mindset and product orientation, someone who can step back, understand the “why,” and design thoughtful, end-to-end solutions. You should be energized by ambiguity, drawn to solving hard problems, and excited to experiment with the latest AI tooling to accelerate development and innovation.

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll set technical direction, influence architecture, and raise the bar across the team. You’ll partner closely with product, design, and DevOps while mentoring others and driving best practices but most importantly, you’ll help define what modern, AI-driven software engineering looks like in practice.

Remote/Hybrid Schedule: This role follows a hybrid work model. Candidates within 50 miles of Chicago are expected to work onsite two days per week (Monday and Tuesday) and remotely three days per week. Candidates outside of the 50-mile radius are eligible for fully remote work. 

WHAT YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO

<strong>Hands-on Technical Contribution</strong> Contribute significant portions of production code in our core stack (e.g., Python, Java, Angular, DBT, Snowflake etc.), following best practices and coding standards. 

<strong>Testing & Automation</strong> Develop unit, integration, and performance tests. Integrate test suites into CI/CD pipelines and champion automation at every stage of delivery. 

<strong>Debugging & Root Cause Analysis</strong> Investigate complex issues across services and data flows, perform root cause analysis, and implement durable fixes. 

<strong>Lead Architecture & System Design</strong> Architect, design, and actively develop core features and components for both application and data platforms, ensuring scalability, performance, and security. 

<strong>Establish and Uphold Engineering Standards</strong> Champion code quality, testing practices, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and reliability. Ensure both application and data systems meet rigorous operational and compliance requirements. 

<strong>Cross-functional Collaboration</strong> Partner with product managers, designers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into sound technical solutions. Work closely with DevOps to enable seamless delivery. 

<strong>Mentorship & Technical Leadership</strong> Provide guidance and mentorship to engineers across teams. Elevate the technical bar by sharing knowledge, conducting deep design reviews, and fostering an inclusive culture of learning. 

<strong>Innovation & Continuous Improvement</strong> Explore new technologies, tools, and practices that can enhance team productivity and product capabilities. Propose and execute proof-of-concepts that align with strategic goals. 

<strong>Operational Excellence & Reliability</strong> Ensure that systems are designed for monitoring, alerting, and fault tolerance. Drive root cause analysis for critical issues and champion preventive engineering practices. 

COMPETENCIES

<strong>Software Architecture & System Design</strong> Expertise in designing distributed, scalable, and secure systems. Strong grasp of microservices, APIs, event-driven design, and data-intensive architectures. 

<strong>Programming & Engineering Practices</strong> Advanced proficiency in more than one modern programming language (e.g., Python, Java, or similar), with a strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented design. Advocates for clean code, testing strategies, and CI/CD automation.  

• Data & Application Engineering

• Ability to work across domains:

  • Application Engineering - designing resilient backend services, integrating with APIs, ensuring performance and reliability. Strong knowledge of Python (Django), modern JavaScript frameworks, or experience in Java (Spring/Java EE)

*   <strong>Data Engineering</strong> <strong>-</strong> building and optimizing ETL/ELT pipelines, working with SQL and modern warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery), and applying DataOps best practices.

    <strong>Cloud & Infrastructure -</strong>Solid understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code. Strong knowledge of monitoring, logging, and observability tools.

    <strong>Security & Compliance Awareness -</strong> Familiarity with application and data security best practices, identity and access management, and regulatory standards (e.g., SOC2, HIPAA).

    <strong>Technical Leadership -</strong>Provides architectural guidance, conducts in-depth design and code reviews, and sets engineering standards. Recognized as a subject matter expert within the team.

    <strong>Problem Solving & Innovation -</strong>Demonstrates ability to analyze complex problems, troubleshoot across system boundaries, and propose innovative, future-ready solutions. 

*   <strong>Healthcare Experience</strong> -Proven experience working in the healthcare domain, with familiarity in clinical data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR) and compliance frameworks (e.g., HIPAA, SOC2). 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Advanced degree (Master’s/Ph.D.) is a plus but not required. 

6+ years of engineering experience. 

Strong understanding of data privacy and security requirements in regulated industries. 

Hands-on experience with modern data platforms (e.g., dbt, Spark, Kafka, Airflow) or application frameworks (e.g., Django, Node.js, Spring Boot,). 

Exposure to DevOps/SRE practices, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, and observability. 

Experience leading complex technical initiatives such as system migrations, re-architecture, or enterprise integrations. 

Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide senior engineers, driving technical strategy across teams.
