Salary: $145,000 - $175,000
100% Remote from the continental US excluding the Pacific Time Zone and New York state
About the Role
This role is for a Senior Cartographic Designer with deep expertise in cartography, GIS, and map design to help shape the visual quality and effectiveness of the maps throughout our software platform. The ideal candidate has a passion for transforming complex spatial data into intuitive, beautiful, and informative maps that communicate insight and support confident decision-making. They possess a strong foundation in cartographic principles, an exceptional eye for visual design, and an appreciation for how users interact with maps in modern software applications.
This is a hands-on role, working closely with software engineers, product managers, and domain experts to establish cartographic standards, improve the aesthetics and usability of map layers, and ensure that maps effectively communicate the right information at every scale. You will evaluate existing map products, develop styles and design guidelines, recommend improvements to symbology, labeling, color palettes, and visual hierarchy, and collaborate with engineering teams to implement high-quality cartographic designs. Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain cartographic standards, style guides, and design principles used across the organization's mapping products.
- Design and refine map styles that improve readability, visual hierarchy, consistency, and overall user experience.
- Evaluate existing map layers and recommend improvements to symbology, labeling, typography, color palettes, and scale-dependent rendering.
- Collaborate closely with software engineers to translate cartographic designs into production-ready map styles and rendering rules.
- Review new map layers and features to ensure they meet established standards for aesthetics, usability, and effective communication.
- Work with product managers and subject matter experts to understand user needs and ensure maps support customer workflows and decision-making.
- Create prototypes and design concepts to explore new approaches for visualizing geospatial information.
- Identify opportunities to improve how complex spatial information is presented through thoughtful cartographic design and visualization techniques.
- Provide guidance and mentorship on cartographic best practices to engineers and other members of the product organization.
- Stay current with advances in cartography, GIS, geospatial visualization, and mapping technologies, and recommend new techniques that improve the quality of the product.
Qualifications
- Must reside in the continental US
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS, Geographic Information Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of professional experience in cartography, GIS, or geospatial visualization, with a strong emphasis on map design and visual communication.
- Authorized to work in the U.S. with no visa sponsorship required
- Demonstrated expertise in cartographic principles, including symbology, labeling, typography, color theory, visual hierarchy, and map composition.
- Experience designing maps for digital products, web applications, or interactive mapping platforms.
- Experience creating and maintaining cartographic styles, templates, and design standards.
- Working knowledge of spatial data formats, coordinate reference systems, and geospatial data management concepts.
Nice to Have
- Experience designing maps for commercial software products or SaaS platforms.
- Familiarity with scripting or programming languages such as Python or JavaScript to automate cartographic workflows or collaborate more effectively with engineering teams.
- Experience conducting user research or usability evaluations focused on maps and geospatial interfaces.
- Knowledge of accessibility principles as they apply to map design, including color accessibility and legibility across devices and display environments.
- A portfolio demonstrating exceptional cartographic design and geospatial visualization work.
