About the Company
WHEN Justice is a crowdsourcing platform democratizing litigation funding. We enable the public to directly fund strategic litigation that protects the environment, strengthens food safety standards, and defends consumer rights. Our mission is to hold accountable those who put power and profit before people, communities, and the planet we share. Unlike traditional legal advocacy organizations, our model puts the public at the center. Ordinary people fund the cases, follow their progress, and share in the outcomes of holding powerful actors accountable. That makes marketing and community-building core to how we operate, not a support function.
About the Role
We are hiring a Chief Marketing Officer to build our national awareness, mobilization, and fundraising engine. This role goes well beyond communications. The CMO will own the strategy and systems that turn cases and public-interest issues into broad public engagement, campaign participation, and recurring financial support from the crowd. The issues behind our cases affect nearly every household: drinking water, food safety, consumer protection. The CMO's job is to make this work clear and compelling to the public, and to convert that attention into funders, campaign participants, and long-term supporters. Because our campaigns are anchored to active litigation, everything we publish has to be accurate and defensible. We consider that a strength, and we're looking for a marketing leader who does too. AI is central to how we intend to scale. We are a lean organization competing for attention against much larger institutions, and we expect our CMO to be genuinely fluent in applying AI tools across the marketing function: content production, audience segmentation, campaign testing, personalization, analytics, and workflow automation. We are looking for someone who has already put these tools to work and can show what they produced, and who can build an AI-forward marketing operation rather than simply approve of one. The CMO reports to the Executive Director, sits on the executive leadership team, and owns the full marketing and growth function.
Responsibilities
- Set brand strategy, voice, and public narrative for the organization and its crowdfunding model
- Design and run integrated campaigns tied to specific cases, urgent public-interest issues, and organizational priorities
- Build and scale case-level crowdfunding campaigns, crowdsourced charitable efforts, and peer-to-peer fundraising programs
- Own the digital fundraising funnel end to end: supporter acquisition, conversion, retention, and stewardship, with specific accountability for recurring contributors and peer-to-peer fundraisers
- Grow email and SMS programs into major revenue and mobilization channels
- Direct social media, content, creative production, and paid and organic distribution
- Build an AI-enabled marketing operation: select the tooling, define the workflows, and set the standards for how AI is used in content, targeting, testing, and reporting
- Lead earned-media strategy so case milestones and findings translate into coverage and reach
- Develop partnerships with aligned organizations, creators, and institutions
- Build supporter community programs that drive repeat engagement across multiple cases over time
- Establish analytics, attribution, and reporting to measure performance and forecast growth
- Work closely with legal, development, communications, operations, and executive leadership; partner with attorneys to ensure public claims are accurate and appropriately framed
- Build the marketing team, agency relationships, and operating systems while running campaigns from the start
Qualifications
We prioritize demonstrated outcomes. Strong candidates will be able to show:
- Crowdfunding, crowdsourced, or peer-to-peer campaigns they designed and scaled, with specifics on funds raised and participants activated
- Donor or customer growth results: acquisition volume, conversion rates, retention, and recurring-revenue improvements
- Substantial email and SMS list growth, and the revenue and mobilization those lists produced
- Concrete results from applying AI tools in marketing: efficiency gains, output volume, performance improvements, or cost reductions they can quantify
- Quantifiable earned-media reach and brand growth
- Public awareness or advocacy campaigns with measurable participation
In addition:
- 10+ years in growth marketing, digital fundraising, cause marketing, or advocacy, including several years leading teams and owning revenue or growth targets
- Working fluency with CRM, email/SMS platforms, paid acquisition, analytics, A/B testing, and attribution
- Hands-on experience with current AI tools for content, creative, segmentation, and analytics, and clear judgment about where they help and where they don't
- Strong writing and storytelling ability, particularly in making legal, environmental, consumer-protection, and food-safety issues accessible to a general audience
- Sound judgment about accuracy and tone in public communications, especially in a litigation context
- Experience operating effectively in a fast-moving, founder-led organization
- Nonprofit, political, advocacy, marketplace, or platform experience preferred; commercial growth leaders with relevant cause-driven work will be considered
What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months
- Brand strategy, narrative platform, and campaign playbook defined and in use across the organization
- Email and SMS programs launched or rebuilt, with quarterly list-growth targets set and met
- At least three case-level crowdfunding campaigns launched, each with defined participation, media, and revenue goals and documented results
- A peer-to-peer program operating with its first cohort of supporter-fundraisers
- A recurring-contributor program with clear acquisition, conversion, and retention benchmarks, showing month-over-month growth
- An AI-enabled marketing stack in place, with documented gains in output, testing velocity, or cost per acquisition
- Measurable earned-media coverage on priority cases and issues
- A performance dashboard in regular use by the executive team, connecting marketing spend and effort to supporters acquired, funds raised, and contributors retained
- Initial team and agency infrastructure in place with clear scopes
