About the Role
Lumber is building the operating system for the construction workforce, spanning workforce management, HR, payroll, onboarding, scheduling, compliance, credentials, and professional development. We are looking for a Staff Product Designer to help shape the next generation of products across the Lumber and BuilderFax ecosystem.
This role is for a senior individual contributor who can operate at a high strategic level while still producing excellent hands-on design work. You will lead complex product initiatives across mobile and web, with a strong emphasis on consumer-grade app experiences, worker-facing mobile flows, onboarding, identity, credentials, career growth, and construction workforce workflows.
You should be equally comfortable simplifying messy enterprise workflows and designing polished, intuitive mobile experiences for tradespeople, field teams, contractors, unions, training organizations, and credential issuers.
Job Title: Staff Product Designer
Location: Remote (US Shift Hours)
Required Work Experience: 8-12 years
What You’ll Work On
You will help lead design across strategic product areas, including:
- BuilderFax mobile and web experiences, including credential wallets, professional identity, career records, onboarding, sharing, verification, and issuer workflows.
- Lumber mobile experiences for field workers, foremen, supervisors, and tradespeople.
- Consumer-grade onboarding flows across SMS, mobile app, QR code, credential claiming, account creation, and profile setup.
- Workforce, HR, payroll, onboarding, compliance, scheduling, and training-related workflows.
- New product concepts tied to construction workforce identity, professional development, credentialing, job readiness, and career progression.
- Cross-platform product patterns that work across mobile, desktop web, admin portals, and field-first workflows.
- Prototypes, design systems, interaction models, and strategic product narratives used to align Product, Engineering, Sales, Customer Success, and leadership.
What You’ll Do
- Own ambiguous, high-impact product areas from concept through execution.
- Translate complex construction, HR, payroll, compliance, credentialing, and workforce workflows into simple, intuitive product experiences.
- Design consumer-quality mobile app experiences that feel polished, modern, trustworthy, and easy to use.
- Create flows, wireframes, prototypes, interaction models, product narratives, and production-ready UI.
- Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Customer Success, Sales, and leadership to define product direction.
- Use customer insight, product strategy, and business goals to make strong design decisions.
- Lead design reviews and raise the quality bar across interaction design, visual design, UX writing, information architecture, and product thinking.
- Help establish scalable patterns across Lumber, BuilderFax, and future product surfaces.
- Mentor other designers through critique, feedback, systems thinking, and product judgment.
- Balance speed, quality, and clarity in a fast-moving startup environment.
What We’re Looking For
- 8–12+ years of product design experience, ideally with experience at the Senior, Staff, Lead, Principal, or very senior IC level.
- Strong experience designing consumer mobile apps or consumer-grade product experiences.
- A portfolio showing high-quality mobile UX, onboarding, identity, profile, marketplace, wallet, social, career, learning, productivity, or professional app experiences.
- Strong systems thinking across mobile, desktop, admin workflows, notifications, onboarding, and cross-product experiences.
- Ability to simplify complex workflows without over-flattening important business logic.
- Strong product judgment and the ability to challenge assumptions, clarify problems, and shape product strategy.
- Excellent interaction design, visual design, information architecture, and prototyping skills.
- Experience partnering deeply with PMs and engineers, not just handing off screens.
- Ability to work through ambiguity, drive alignment, and move quickly without needing perfect inputs.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain design decisions clearly to executives, engineers, PMs, and customer-facing teams.
Highly Relevant Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is a strong plus:
- Consumer mobile apps
- Construction technology
- Workforce management
- HR software, HRIS, onboarding, benefits, payroll, compliance, or scheduling
- Credentialing, certifications, licenses, training records, LMS, or professional development
- Career platforms, job marketplaces, talent marketplaces, staffing, recruiting, or worker profiles
- Identity, verification, trust networks, wallets, portable profiles, or profile-sharing products
- Field-service software, deskless workforce products, or mobile-first enterprise tools
- B2B2C products where both administrators and end users need great experiences
- Startups or fast-growing SaaS companies
Nice to Have
- Experience designing for tradespeople, field workers, hourly workers, contractors, unions, schools, training providers, or similar non-desk users.
- Experience with SMS-based onboarding, QR flows, mobile account claiming, document upload, OCR, or credential verification.
- Experience building prototypes in Figma, Claude, Framer, v0, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted workflows, workflow automation, or intelligent recommendations.
- Experience contributing to or extending design systems across multiple products and platforms.
