They are seeking a highly experienced Staff Systems Software Engineer to lead the development and integration of system software for their diagnostic technology, ensuring seamless hardware-software interaction and mentoring other engineers in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as a technical leader within a tightly integrated, multi-disciplinary software team, collaborating with engineering and science disciplines to deliver Vital Bio’s flagship diagnostic platform, VitalOne.

• Mentor and support other engineers, providing code reviews, technical guidance, and best practices for sustainable engineering processes in a regulated medical device environment.

• Drive the expansion and optimization of control and application software running on integrated devices, R&D systems, and the cloud, ensuring scalability and maintainability.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system requirements, refine hardware integrations, and support the full product development lifecycle from prototyping to commercialization.

• Champion the use of modern build systems, automated testing, and system image integration frameworks (e.g., Yocto, Buildroot, NixOS) to ensure high-quality, reproducible software releases.

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve complex system-level issues, leveraging your expertise in embedded Linux, device drivers, and hardware abstraction.

• Contribute to the development and documentation of system requirements, design specifications, and test protocols to support regulatory submissions and quality assurance.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Extensive experience with C or C++ in systems programming, including kernel-level development.

• Advanced proficiency with Rust or a strong desire to drive Rust adoption as a primary implementation language.

• Deep expertise with embedded Linux environments, including boot process, device driver model, devicetree, and system-level debugging.

• Strong background in automated build systems and system image integration frameworks (e.g., Yocto, Buildroot, NixOS).

• Proven ability to read electronics schematics, interpret device datasheets, and implement robust hardware integrations.

• Demonstrated success leading technical initiatives and mentoring engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

• Experience supporting sustainable engineering processes for highly complex, regulated products (medical device experience strongly preferred).

• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred:

• Experience in in-vitro diagnostics, medical devices, or regulated healthcare technology.

• Familiarity with cloud-connected embedded systems and IoT architectures.

• Contributions to open-source projects or technical communities.

• An appreciation for puns!
