Job Summary:
Emmes is a biomedical informatics and health information technology consultancy focused on advancing clinical research. They are seeking a Senior AI Software Engineer to join their Modern Technology & Engineering team, where the role involves developing AI-driven models and analyzing complex biological datasets to support precision oncology efforts.
Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with biologists, clinicians, and software engineers to design AI-powered analytics for genomics, proteomics, and clinical data.
• Apply large language models and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques to make biomedical data interoperable and AI-ready for the National Cancer Institute and related projects.
• Curate, model, and integrate genetic and clinical datasets into standardized, interoperable formats to support precision medicine.
• Work with clinical laboratories to ensure accurate data ingestion into the MATCH processing infrastructure.
• Design, test, and optimize pipelines for variant calling and annotation, leveraging scripting languages (Python, SQL) and modern ML workflows.
• Contribute to the design of intuitive databases and interactive web tools for researchers and clinicians.
• Generate high-quality, interpretable reports for internal and external stakeholders, supporting clinical and research decision-making.
• Work with enterprise-level software system and services for our clients, using Python (or other programming languages)
• Drive and refine AI/ML best practices and processes, as well as provide resolutions to identified issues and bugs.
• Write well-tested and maintainable code leveraging unit, integration, and BDD tests.
• Contribute to project documentation, including architecture diagrams, sequence diagrams, technical documentation and SOPs.
• Participate in SDLC-related planning, standup, review, and retrospective meetings when required.
• Provide leadership support for your project team in the absence of the team lead.
• Work in a collaborative cross-functional team environment to move features (JIRA tasks) across all tiers in a CI/CD Agile SCRUM environment.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, when necessary, to complete cross-project initiatives (e.g., common use libraries).
• Put together presentation(s) and be able to present to a technical and non-technical audience. Meet with project stakeholders to discuss technical topics.
• Contribute domain-specific articles to the technical knowledge base to support knowledge sharing across teams.
• Be a proactive part of the MT&E team, looking to broaden and improve our foundational AI/ML capabilities.
• Assist junior staff with task-related or troubleshooting problems.
• Interview technical candidate(s) and provide evaluation/recommendation to the hiring manager.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Strong communication skills (oral and written).
• Proficient in Python, Java, Ruby, or comparable programming languages.
• Ph.D. in Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field.
• Strong track record in machine learning and AI, including deep learning (CNNs, GNNs) for biomedical or complex data applications.
• Experience with ML frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow) and code versioning (Git).
• Familiarity with genetic variant standards (HGVS, VCF) and clinical data ontologies.
• Demonstrated success applying AI/ML to biomedical or multi-modal datasets (genomics, proteomics, clinical).
• Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and communicate technical results clearly to diverse teams.
• Ability to translate complex data analyses into actionable insights for multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred:
• Track record of publications and innovation in AI-driven data science for life sciences.
