This role offers the opportunity to design and lead the development of a highly scalable FHIR Repository service capable of managing hundreds of terabytes of healthcare data. You will be responsible for architecting core services that ensure reliable storage, retrieval, and management of FHIR resources at massive scale. The position combines deep expertise in Java engineering, distributed systems, and database scalability with leadership responsibilities, driving technical excellence across teams. You will collaborate closely with product, cloud operations, and security teams to ensure compliance and interoperability, while influencing architectural decisions, mentoring engineers, and delivering solutions that impact healthcare data management at a global level. Accountabilities
- Architect and lead the design of a scalable, fault-tolerant FHIR Repository supporting high-throughput operations
- Define and implement data modeling, storage, and indexing strategies optimized for FHIR resource retrieval and updates at petabyte scale
- Drive performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency initiatives across the repository and related services
- Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and other standards
- Evaluate and integrate cloud-native and database technologies (RDS, Aurora, PostgreSQL, sharding, caching) to support system growth
- Lead proof-of-concepts and architectural prototypes to validate design approaches
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure seamless integration with APIs, analytics pipelines, and interoperability solutions
- Mentor engineers, guide technical direction, and ensure adherence to best practices in software engineering and system design
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in technical leadership or architectural roles
- Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and related frameworks
- Extensive experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Aurora), including scaling, sharding, performance tuning, and distributed queries
- Proven background in designing distributed systems, data pipelines, or large-scale storage services
- Understanding of FHIR standards, RESTful APIs, and healthcare data interoperability principles
- Knowledge of data partitioning, caching, and lifecycle management in high-volume systems
- Strong foundation in cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), including monitoring, autoscaling, and resiliency
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Preferred: experience with healthcare data (FHIR, HL7, EDI), containerized/orchestrated environments (Docker, Kubernetes), and healthcare data governance (HIPAA, HITRUST)
