Lead Software Engineer (Python) - Simulation Intelligence
Company: Anadyr Horizon
Department: Engineering
Location: Remote, United States
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports to: CEO
Start Date: Immediately
Compensation: $175,000-$225,000 base salary, plus bonus and significant equity
Overview
Anadyr Horizon is building the world’s first Simulation Intelligence platform, a new category of technology designed to model how governments, markets, institutions, and individuals behave under pressure.
Wars, financial crises, supply-chain disruptions, and strategic surprises rarely begin with obvious signals. They emerge from thousands of interconnected decisions made under uncertainty. Anadyr Horizon’s platform helps identify hidden pathways of escalation before they become reality.
The company’s proprietary Agentic Systems Intelligence platform combines agent-based simulation, systems modeling, behavioral science, and modern AI. Governments use the platform to anticipate geopolitical crises, while financial institutions use it to understand how political decisions may affect markets before conventional analysis catches up.
Anadyr Horizon is seeking an exceptional Lead Software Engineer (Python) - Simulation Intelligence to help architect and scale North Star, its core Simulation Intelligence platform.
This is a foundational engineering leadership role for someone who wants to do more than manage an established team. You will work directly with the founders, own major architectural decisions, modernize complex simulation infrastructure, establish engineering standards, and help build the engineering organization from the ground up.
The ideal candidate is an expert Python engineer with deep production backend experience, strong systems-design judgment, and the ability to translate research prototypes, mathematical models, and complex concepts into reliable production software.
Because this role may support future work requiring a U.S. security clearance, candidates must be U.S. citizens currently residing in the United States.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and continued evolution of North Star’s backend platform.
- Design, build, and maintain scalable Python services, REST APIs, distributed systems, and simulation infrastructure.
- Modernize the existing simulation engine while continuing to ship meaningful production features.
- Translate research prototypes, mathematical models, and experimental systems into reliable, maintainable production software.
- Improve the reliability, scalability, performance, observability, and security of the company’s AWS infrastructure.
- Establish engineering standards across architecture, testing, documentation, code quality, CI/CD, deployment, and monitoring.
- Make thoughtful technical decisions that balance long-term architecture with the need to move quickly.
- Remain highly hands-on by writing production code, reviewing pull requests, debugging systems, and solving complex technical problems.
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance, thoughtful code reviews, and architectural leadership.
- Work closely with the founders, research, product, and design teams to turn complex ideas into meaningful product capabilities.
- Help recruit, onboard, and develop future members of Anadyr Horizon’s engineering organization.
- Take ownership beyond a traditional job description by proactively identifying technical systems, processes, and areas that need improvement.
Qualifications
- U.S. citizen currently residing in the United States.
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Expert-level Python experience, including several years building and operating production backend systems.
- Experience serving as a technical lead, lead engineer, staff engineer, engineering manager, or similar technical leadership role.
- A track record of remaining hands-on with production code while leading technical projects or engineering teams.
- Strong software architecture, systems design, and computer science fundamentals.
- Experience designing and operating REST APIs, distributed systems, and scalable backend services.
- Strong SQL, database design, and PostgreSQL experience.
- Production experience with AWS and modern cloud infrastructure.
- Experience with Docker, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and production monitoring.
- Experience owning meaningful architectural decisions across a platform, rather than only individual features or isolated services.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High agency and the ability to operate effectively in an early-stage environment with ambiguity and limited structure.
- Genuine interest in building a new category of technology and helping create an engineering organization from its earliest stages.
A background in computer science, physics, applied mathematics, engineering, operations research, computational science, or another hard science or quantitative discipline is strongly preferred.
Experience or demonstrated interest in geopolitics, national security, financial markets, strategic decision-making, behavioral science, or complex systems is also highly valued.
Additional Preferred Experience
- Scientific computing, numerical methods, or mathematical modeling
- Simulation platforms or agent-based modeling
- Machine learning infrastructure
- Data engineering and complex data pipelines
- FastAPI or similar Python API frameworks
- Modernizing large or technically complex production systems
- Infrastructure as Code
- Security-focused engineering or SOC 2 environments
- Defense technology, intelligence, risk analysis, forecasting, fintech, or research-driven organizations
- Converting research code, notebooks, or prototypes into scalable production systems
Benefits
- Base salary of $175,000-$225,000
- Performance-based bonus
- Significant equity participation reflecting the ownership expected from a foundational engineering hire
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Remote-first working environment within the United States
- Flexible paid time off
- Direct access to and collaboration with Anadyr Horizon’s founders
- Meaningful ownership over architecture, engineering culture, hiring, and technical execution
- The opportunity to help define an entirely new category of software
- Significant potential for long-term engineering leadership as the company grows
