What You’ll Do
IronArch is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to support the Benefits Discovery Service (BDS) within the VA’s RISE portfolio. BDS improves efficiency by ensuring veterans apply only for benefits they are eligible for, reducing processing time, eliminating unnecessary applications, and enabling proactive outreach to avoid delays in accessing critical benefits. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will serve as a subject matter expert in JAVA development and software engineering practices on the BDS team. You will be hands-on in building and maintaining scalable, secure, and resilient cloud-native applications, while also ensuring smooth integration across VA enterprise systems. This role requires a balance of deep technical skills, architectural judgment, and the ability to mentor and guide team members.
This role offers the opportunity to directly impact how veterans discover and access the benefits they have earned, while shaping the technical direction of a modern, scalable service within VA’s RISE portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services in Java (Javalin, Maven) with containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS).
- Implement and optimize RESTful APIs to integrate BDS with VA.gov and other enterprise systems.
- Leverage DataDog for monitoring, observability, and performance optimization.
- Build and support CI/CD pipelines that align with VA’s DevSecOps compliance and deployment requirements.
- Ensure all development meets VA security, compliance, and accessibility standards.
- Collaborate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies (planning, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives) to align technical work with program objectives.
- Demonstrate expertise, accountability, and ownership of contributions to the BDS application code base.
- Maintain a high-level understanding of adjacent systems (APIs, data platforms, security infrastructure) to ensure interoperability across VA environments.
- Lead troubleshooting and incident resolution in production and non-production environments, proactively identifying root causes and driving systemic improvements.
- Actively mentor junior engineers and foster a collaborative engineering culture.
- Communicate complex technical issues and system developments effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Champion secure software development best practices, peer review processes, and high-quality documentation.
Requirements
- Ability to obtain Public Trust Clearance
Preferred Experience
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in cloud-native or containerized environments.
- Currently onboarded with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Strong expertise in Java, Javalin, Maven, and Docker/Kubernetes.
- Proven experience deploying and monitoring applications in AWS cloud.
- Hands-on experience with observability tools such as DataDog.
- Familiarity with VA security, compliance, and deployment pipelines.
- Prior experience with VA or other federal government IT projects is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver in Agile/Scrum teams and mentor junior engineers.
