Role Description

We are looking for a full-time Java Software Engineer to join our team in Centar, Skopje.

This is a hybrid role, with work based primarily from our office in Centar, Skopje, combined with flexibility for remote work when appropriate.

The role involves designing, developing, extending, and maintaining backend services and enterprise applications used in government, institutional, and regulated environments. The engineer will participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, troubleshooting, documentation, and long-term maintenance.

Day-to-day responsibilities include developing Java-based backend services, building and maintaining APIs, integrating with existing systems and external services, optimizing performance, resolving production issues, and ensuring the reliability, security, and maintainability of critical software platforms.

This position is ideal for an engineer who is comfortable working on complex enterprise systems, understands the importance of stable and well-structured code, and wants to contribute to software that supports real public-sector and institutional operations.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain Java-based backend applications and services.
• Build and enhance APIs and backend components using Java and the Spring Framework.
• Work on enterprise and government-oriented systems with complex business logic.
• Integrate applications with external systems, databases, registries, and third-party services.
• Participate in requirements analysis, solution design, development, testing, and deployment.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in development, testing, and production environments.
• Improve application performance, reliability, scalability, and security.
• Maintain and extend existing systems, including legacy and enterprise platforms.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
• Collaborate with project managers, analysts, developers, QA engineers, DevOps engineers, and stakeholders.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices.
• Support technical documentation, deployment notes, and operational procedures.
• Help ensure systems meet reliability, security, and compliance expectations for institutional environments.

Qualifications

• Strong experience in software development and backend programming.
• Hands-on experience with Java and the Spring Framework.
• Experience building backend services, APIs, and enterprise applications.
• Understanding of microservices architecture, service communication, and resilient system design.
• Familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle.
• Good knowledge of SQL.
• Experience integrating systems through REST APIs, SOAP services, message queues, or database-level integrations.
• Familiarity with Git, unit testing, integration testing, and CI/CD practices.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative hybrid team environment.
• Good understanding of secure coding practices and system reliability.
• Ability to work with existing systems, understand business logic, and safely extend production applications.
• Relevant education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Informatics, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have

• Experience working on government, institutional, banking, healthcare, telecom, or other regulated enterprise systems.
• Experience with Oracle databases, Oracle PL/SQL, or complex database-driven applications.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Linux environments, or cloud platforms.
• Familiarity with DevOps workflows, GitLab CI/CD, Maven, monitoring, and logging tools.
• Experience with performance optimization and production support.
• Experience working with legacy modernization, system integrations, or long-term maintenance projects.
• Understanding of ISO-based environments, information security standards, or public-sector documentation requirements.
