Principal Backend Software Engineer
Location: Remote or Hybrid (Lisbon, Portugal)
Salary: €4,000–€6,000 gross per month
We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer who is passionate about designing and delivering high-performance services at scale. As a key contributor to our engineering team, you will help build the systems that power mission-critical customer products, internal platforms, and large distributed applications.
You will collaborate with cross-functional product teams, shape the technical roadmap, and influence engineering excellence across the organisation. As a Principal Engineer you will lead from a technical point of view, mentor others and help drive impactful architectural decisions.
What you will do
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs
- Architect new features end to end, from concept to deployment
- Improve system performance, reliability, and scalability
- Work with distributed systems, microservices, and asynchronous messaging
- Contribute to clean, reusable, and maintainable code
- Guide and support other engineers through code reviews and knowledge sharing
- Help define standards, best practices, and technical direction
What you bring
- Strong experience in backend engineering and service-oriented architecture
- Proficiency in any modern backend language considered (Java, .NET, Kotlin, Go, etc.)
- Willingness to work with our current stack: .NET / C#
- Hands-on experience with microservices, distributed systems, and messaging tools (RabbitMQ, Kafka, etc.)
- Deep understanding of performance tuning, concurrency, and async patterns
- Experience on large-scale systems with monitoring, metrics, and observability
- Ability to take ownership, plan autonomously, and deliver complex solutions
Nice to have
- Event-driven or reactive architecture experience
- Technical leadership or mentorship of engineering teams
- Strong grounding in algorithms, design patterns, and software craftsmanship
