Environment: Enterprise on-premises data centers; production and disaster recovery
Project Duration Weight
VMware-to-Hyper-V migration leadership - 30%
Enterprise data center migration management - 20%
VMware and Hyper-V technical fluency - 20%
Estimated 12–18 months - 15%
Governance, vendors and stakeholders - 10%
Regulated / mission-critical operations - 5%
Position Summary:
- Lead a large-scale enterprise migration from VMware vSphere/ESXi to Microsoft Hyper-V across on-premises data centers. Own integrated delivery planning, governance, resources, cross-team dependencies, migration waves, production cutovers, validation, and transition to steady-state operations. Partner closely with a dedicated Hyper-V Solution Architect for technical design authority.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Project governance and delivery — Build and maintain the charter, master schedule, budget, resourcing plan, dependency map, RAID log, milestone tracker, and executive reporting. Coordinate internal teams, Microsoft and other third-party partners.
- Discovery and migration planning — Oversee VMware VM, host, cluster and application inventory; classify workloads by business criticality and compatibility; coordinate target-state architecture reviews, proof of concept, pilot execution, and wave sequencing.
- Cross-functional coordination — Align compute, Windows/Linux, storage, networking, security, backup, monitoring, DR, and application owners. Track migration prerequisites including licensing, capacity, OS support, application certification, and integration dependencies.
- Execution and cutover — Run migration readiness reviews, change approvals, maintenance windows, bridge calls, cutover checklists, rollback decisions and post-migration application acceptance. Monitor failures, rework and migration throughput.
- Operational handover — Coordinate updated runbooks, backup/restore tests, monitoring, access, incident escalation, hypercare, DR validation, decommissioning, and formal service acceptance.
Required technical understanding:
- VMware — ESXi, vCenter, vSphere, vMotion, HA, DRS, distributed virtual switches and familiarity with vSAN.
- Microsoft virtualization — Hyper-V, Windows Server Failover Clustering, Cluster Shared Volumes, Live Migration, Hyper-V virtual switches, System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), Windows Admin Center.
- Enterprise dependencies — SAN/NAS, iSCSI/Fibre Channel, VLANs, network segmentation, Active Directory, Linux/Windows guest systems, enterprise backups, DR and monitoring.
- Migration practices — V2V conversion approaches, compatibility assessment, pilot gates, wave-based cutovers, recovery checkpoints, rollback criteria and production validation.
- Management tooling — MS Project, Jira or equivalent, ServiceNow change management, PowerShell awareness and dashboard/reporting tools.
Qualifications:
- Essential — Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; 10+ years in IT infrastructure, including 5+ years leading complex infrastructure or virtualization migrations; proven executive stakeholder management, supplier coordination and production change discipline.
- Strongly preferred — Direct ownership of at least one VMware-to-Hyper-V migration, or comparable enterprise hypervisor transition, involving hundreds of VMs; experience coordinating production and DR environments.
Certifications: PMP or PRINCE2; ITIL 4; relevant VMware VCP-DCV or Microsoft Windows Server/Hyper-V credentials are beneficial, not substitutes for delivery experience.
Expected deliverables: Approved integrated plan and RAID register; infrastructure assessment and dependency inventory; wave schedule and readiness gates; pilot results; production cutover and rollback packs; weekly executive status; application validation and sign-offs; hypercare and operations acceptance package.
