Senior Software Engineer (Contract)

Location: Fully remote (UK-based)

Day rate: £450 - £475 (Outside IR35)

Contract: 6 months initially

About the role

We’re hiring four Senior Software Engineers on behalf of a leading UK consultancy delivering services to a high-profile government client. You’ll join a collaborative, cross-functional engineering team working on full stack development of geospatial and data-driven applications.

This is a fully remote contract role (UK only) with competitive day rates and the opportunity to work on large-scale public sector systems.

What you’ll do

• Lead and contribute to front and back-end software development using Java and JavaScript
• Enhance and extend existing codebases while developing new product features
• Implement design updates and create new front-end applications
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across development, DevOps, and design
• Support CI/CD pipelines and containerised deployments (Docker, AWS, Azure)
• Apply Agile and/or Kanban delivery methods to ensure high-quality output

Core skills and experience

• Proven experience in Java and JavaScript full stack development
• Strong knowledge of cloud environments (AWS or Azure)
• Experience with Docker and CI/CD pipelines
• Understanding of geospatial systems and tools such as OpenLayers, PostGIS, or MapFish (desirable)
• Ability to work with and improve legacy codebases
• Experience mentoring or leading development teams
• Familiarity with Agile and cross-disciplinary team structures

Nice to have

• Experience with Delphi or similar legacy languages
• Public sector or government project experience
• Exposure to Python, CSS, and PostgreSQL
