Role & Responsibilities

HAUS is seeking an experienced freelance Web Designer. The ideal person will be responsible for the following:

  • Design Marketing Sites That Are Beautiful and Highly Functional: Design marketing websites for deep tech startups that function as powerful brand experiences and serious business tools at the same time. A HAUS site has to make a visitor feel something about a company in the first few seconds and hold up as a usable, well-structured product experience across every page. Beauty without function is decoration; function without beauty is a template. You do both.

  • Push Motion, 3D, and Interactivity as Core Design Elements: Motion is not decoration on the work we ship. You'll design with animation, scroll-driven storytelling, video, interactive components, and where the story calls for it, real-time 3D as first-class elements of the composition, not effects layered on at the end. You concept motion at the same moment you concept layout, and you understand how a page reads in time, not just in space.

  • Think Outside the Grid While Staying On-Brand: Deep tech clients don't want another SaaS template. You're expected to bring genuinely creative structural thinking to every project — custom layouts, unconventional page architectures, unexpected uses of space, type, and imagery — while staying disciplined about the brand system you're extending. The interesting design problem here is doing something distinctive on every project without ever violating the identity work it's built on top of.

  • Extend Client Brand Identity Into the Web Medium: Work closely with HAUS brand designers to take a freshly built visual identity and translate it into a fully realized web experience. A brand system that works beautifully in static form has to come alive on screen, and that requires a designer who can make considered decisions about how typography, color, imagery, and motion behave in a live browser context while staying true to the brand's intent.

  • Ground the Work in UI/UX Best Practices: Sophisticated visual and motion work only matters if the site is navigable, readable, and structured around how people actually move through pages. You bring strong UI/UX fundamentals to every design: clear hierarchy, considered information architecture, responsive behavior that holds up across devices, and interaction patterns that feel obvious even when the design itself is unconventional.

  • Collaborate Closely with the HAUS Creative and Dev Team: You'll work alongside HAUS brand designers, copywriters, art directors, and the developer who builds and deploys each site. That means designing in Figma with handoff in mind — clean files, well-organized components, clear annotations, and thoughtful attention to how your designs will actually be built (typically in Webflow) — and communicating proactively with the developer to resolve constraints before they become problems.

Qualifications

  • Passion for Deep Tech: You must love deep tech and be genuinely excited by cutting-edge technologies.

  • Portfolio & Experience: Professional experience designing marketing websites, ideally at a creative agency or in-house at a design-forward company. Your portfolio must show marketing sites that are visually exceptional, and it must include real motion and interactive work — not just static Figma frames. We want to see sites that made a strong point of view visible on the page.

  • Motion, 3D, and Interactive Fluency: Genuine fluency with motion and interactive design as a core part of your practice, not a side interest. You concept in motion, prototype in tools like Figma, Rive, After Effects, or code-adjacent environments, and you have working familiarity with 3D tools like Spline, Cinema 4D, or Blender as applied to web contexts. You know how a scroll interaction should feel, when a transition should be fast and when it should breathe, and how to spec these things clearly enough for a developer to build them.

  • Design Tool Proficiency: Expert-level Figma, including component libraries, auto layout, and design systems. Strong Adobe Creative Suite skills, particularly Photoshop and Illustrator, for asset creation and image work. Familiarity with Webflow's design paradigm is expected — you don't need to be a developer, but you should understand what's easy, hard, and impossible to build in it and design accordingly.

  • Typography & Visual Design Excellence: An exceptional eye for typography, layout, composition, and visual hierarchy is non-negotiable. You understand how typographic decisions that work in print or static branding have to be adapted for the web, and you make those adaptations with care. Your work is visually refined with a strong sense of whitespace, rhythm, and detail.

  • Structural Creativity: Demonstrated ability to design outside the standard grid without losing coherence. You know the conventional patterns of web layout cold and can go beyond them intentionally when the brand and the story call for it, rather than defaulting to templates or breaking convention just for novelty's sake.

  • Brand Fluency: You're skilled at picking up a brand identity someone else has built and extending it into a new medium without losing what makes it work. You understand brand systems deeply enough to make smart judgment calls when the guidelines don't cover every situation, and you know when to check in with the brand designer versus when to just make the call.

  • UI/UX Fundamentals: Solid understanding of responsive design, grid systems, web typography, information architecture, and interaction design. You design pages that are functional and legible, not just beautiful, and you can defend UX decisions with clear reasoning.

  • Attention to Detail & File Organization: Meticulous about file organization, component naming, and design consistency. Your Figma files are ones developers actually enjoy building from.

  • Communication & Teamwork: Excellent communicator who works fluidly across disciplines with brand designers, copywriters, and developers on the HAUS team. You can articulate design decisions clearly, give and receive feedback constructively, and flag issues proactively before they slow the project down. Since our team is distributed, you need to be comfortable working remotely, collaborating via Slack and Zoom, and proactively communicating status and blockers.

  • Tech Savvy & Curiosity: A genuine passion for technology and innovation is important. Our clients are building world-changing tech in AI, robotics, biotech, aerospace, and more. Your enthusiasm for these domains will help you design for them with the depth and specificity they deserve.

  • Bonus Skills: Fluency with AI tools as part of your design workflow (image generation, layout exploration, asset prep, QA) is a plus. Familiarity with GSAP, Lottie, Framer, or lightweight frontend code will help your work stand out. Any prior work in aerospace, defense, robotics, semiconductors, biotech, climate, energy, or other deep tech verticals will help you understand our clients faster.
